I'm pretty sure this is the Goat of off roading:

Climbing 89° slopes because they crave that mineral

Must be really good shit, considering how many of them will die doing this

When you want the bugs shot directly into your face

[–] grue@lemmy.world 63 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

If only we still had bugs.

But we don't, and that should fucking terrify everybody.

[–] Lavitz@lemmings.world 12 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

If only more people used redneck air conditioning. And I'm not kidding I'm going to school for HVAC cause I don't want to starve in the street. Do y'all understand how bad this shit is?? It was supposed to be a medical device and y'all mofos set that shit to 65 to sleep. I'm not bougie and I understand that the 1% does most of the polluting but we need to change how we live

[–] mister_flibble@lemm.ee 3 points 1 week ago

Whole house fans need to make a comeback. Our house was built in the 1920s and has one from the early 60's before AC was common and I love that fucking thing. We still have some window AC units for really hot days or days when its hot and raining but it cuts WAAAAY down on how often we actually end up using them. Still uses some power obviously but nowhere near as much from what I can tell, and that's a 60 odd year old one.

In practice, with a normal amount of bugs it doesn't really happen

The inside of the intake gets dirty as fuck.

[–] FelixCress@lemmy.world 21 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

That would be genious if it didn't need an open window.

[–] ShellMonkey@lemmy.socdojo.com 47 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Maybe it was an idea from back when trucks used to always have those little triangle windows?

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 18 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

When I had a Volkswagen, I called it, “180-60 air conditioning.” Flip it 180° and drive 60 mph.

[–] ShellMonkey@lemmy.socdojo.com 11 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Funny enough my dad used to mention about 4*80 ac in the car for similar reasons, which makes me wonder if there where a lot of speeding tickets at the time.

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Yeah, I didn’t have to worry about speeding in my bug.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I got to 85 mph in mine once on a straightaway while on a long trip. It wouldn't go faster, but the engine gave it everything no questions. It also didn't feel all that safe, so I didn't do it again. Would I recommend a Beetle to anyone today, absolutely not. But I loved all four that I had in the past, and wouldn't have traded them if I didn't have to. A fun and needy death trap.

According to my dad, bugs were the easiest cars to steal.
You could lower the window from the outside just by firmly pushing against it and down with both hands, then turn the ignition with a flathead screwdriver.

[–] SirSamuel@lemmy.world 11 points 2 weeks ago

I miss these. There's many a day that i wish I had one of these vents on my work van

[–] Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de 11 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

I've often thought that ~~wing mirrors~~ quarter glass should make a comeback. We must have solved the whistling problem by now.

[–] Tagger@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Have wing mirrors gone away?

[–] Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

I meant quarter glass.

Some days I shouldn't comment before coffee.

[–] Cort@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

I hate to be that guy, but they're actually called vent glass/windows, even in modern vehicles where they don't open to ventilate. The quarter glass is in the rear of the vehicle on the quarter panel.

[–] ShellMonkey@lemmy.socdojo.com 5 points 2 weeks ago

In the janky old vehicles I had back when that was a thing I would do stuff like smear some heavy grease on the edge to block the wind. Bottom dollar cars get bottom dollar fixes.

[–] kibiz0r@midwest.social 11 points 2 weeks ago

My sister had a Plymouth Duster with little flaps under the dash that you could open to vent in some air from the outside.

The faster you go, the cooler you are. And also cooler.

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 18 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Yeah, who doesn't want hot and humid air blowing in their face on a hot and humid day?

[–] LavaPlanet@lemmy.world 17 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Don't forget about the bugs! Bees and wasps, funnelled right at your face. Pure, car crash convenience.

[–] Gonzako@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I'll be honest. I think insects are either learning not to go around roads or there are way fewer insects. I can't remember the last time I had a bug on my windshield

[–] McNasty@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The insect apocalypse is real.

Every gas station used to carry bug-b-gone to get the guts off your windshield and headlights.

We're something like 75% down seasonally and 80% down midsummer since 2000.

Yes, the insects have been getting smarter, avoiding roads and living happy lives on lush meadows without disturbing us.
That's the reality I chose to believe in!

[–] postmateDumbass@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

They have all gone to live happily on a farm.

[–] Shapillon@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Is it near the grandma farm?

Beyond the moderate dubiousness of the intended mechanism here, if that thing isn't somehow strapped down or secured beyond being nestled into the half rolled up window, that could very easily come ajar from significant braking or accelerating.

I can't tell you how many times I've been in cars where the driver just piles loose shit all over their dash, or has a fucking chandelier attached to their rearview mirror, which have come loose and hit people in the face or gotten wedged in some wonky position, and this has lead to an actual or near car accident.

[–] tempest@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 weeks ago

It rolling off the dash is the least of people's problems. Depending on the location it might just get launched into your face at 100 miles an hour by an airbag deploying.

Whenever I see people with their feet up on the dash I know they have never seen a person after an air bag has hit them .

[–] iAmTheTot@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

This cannot be good for your fuel efficiency.

[–] anyhow2503@lemmy.world 24 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Neither are other methods of air conditioning/circulation.

[–] motor_spirit@lemmy.world 20 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

man my old Cruze dropped about 1/3 of its power efficiency if you wanted to use AC while trying to get up to speed and merge on the highway

gotta cut the cooling to engage the afterburners

[–] slingstone@lemmy.world 23 points 2 weeks ago

As a geek, I want to refer to this as transferring life support to main engines.

[–] greenhorn@lemm.ee 4 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I still do that in my fiesta. Easier than kicking out a passenger

I wasn't trying to imply they aren't.

[–] Tylerdurdon@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

They could just remove the front and rear windshields and wear goggles.

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Does it at least has a swamp cooler inside, for somewhat colder, but more humid air?

[–] betahack@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

ooooook, in the city this would create your own smog box!

[–] Twinklebreeze@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Where do you think the ac gets it's air from? Either inside the cabin, or the same place this thing gets it's air from.

[–] CountVon@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Except the car's HVAC system passes air through a filter. How much of a difference that makes is going to depend on the type of filter and whether it's been changed sufficiently often, but it's definitely doing more than nothing.
