Whatcha all playing?

I've got a few on my list this week.

Ufo 50 continues to be one of my favorite purchases in a long time. It's the best collection of games since the orange box imo.

The new Zelda has also been stellar. The frame rate issues are certainly unfortunate, and it may be worth it for some to wait on a more powerful switch 2 to play this title, but I highly recommend checking it out at some point. The game is really creative and the Hyrule you get to explore is super fun imo.

I want to get back to the plucky squire, but these games have kept me busy unfortunately

I really don't care about MMOs, especially not Korean MMOs, but this is a very entertaining read.

I recently found a list of "Woke" Video Games on Steam and I thought it'd be pretty funny to check out it and I was not disappointed. This list of over 1,400 games contains some of the most insane takes I've ever heard.

Hey folks, looking for something that scratches an itch. I love the Tales series, but dislike the active combat system. So I'm looking for something in the vein that is low combat or turn based tactical combat.

For comparison, I also enjoy Fire Emblem but wish it was more of an RPG. And have recently replayed Dragon Age: Origins (and wished it was turn based like BG3). In DaO I preferred exploring the Dwarven city over combat by a huge margin.

Graphics don't matter. Depth of story matters. Ideas?

Now you can play DOOM on your GPU. You are confused? Well this means the CPU is no longer used for the logic of the game, it runs basically entirely on GPU. So the graphics card is not only used for graphics, but the main logic of the game. It just needs a little bit help from CPU to start the process I think.

It's a fork from a fork of a fork of a fork:

id-Software/DOOM > insane-adding-machines/DOOM > maximevince/fbDOOM > ozkl/doomgeneric > jhuber6/doomgeneric/tree/amdgpu

I quote the developer (from README):

why

Because I can.

Arch Linux is entering into a direct collaboration with Valve. Valve is generously providing backing for two critical projects that will have a huge impact on the distribution: a build service infrastructure and a secure signing enclave. By supporting work on a freelance basis for these topics, Valve enables them to work on them without being limited solely by the free time of our volunteers.

Seems to me like this studio never actually closed. Either way, this is at least as funny as Ubisoft's and Sony's dreadful live-service games flopping hard.

The limited-time demo (link for the lazy) has no DRM, so all you need to do to preserve it beyond its expiration date is copy the folder it's installed to somewhere else. This works with most limited-time demos on Steam.

You can also copy the large number of DRM-free games on the platform to other systems or create backups of them using the same method. Here's a (likely ver incomplete) list:

TL;DW:

  • Many enhanced games are getting raytracing when they were using simpler lighting solutions previously
  • A surprising handful of games are getting 8K modes, though the 8K usually turns off other enhancements like raytracing. They mentioned GT7 and F1 2024 as two examples.
  • Most enhanced games are focusing on creating a "Performance Pro" mode, which more-or-less gives you the previous quality mode, but at 60fps. Some devs are planning on adding a "Quality Pro" mode that turns on even more features at the cost of FPS.
  • Most enhanced games are using PSSR to upscale from 1080-1440p to 4K.
  • PSSR seems to be better than FSR, but still a little worse than DLSS. Oliver noted a few cases of image breakup and ghosting around the edges.
  • Horizon: FW is not using PSSR, but somehow it seems to be the best-looking of all the enhanced games (in Oliver's opinion).
  • FF7R is dramatically improved image quality wise - previously, performance mode was real fuzzy.
  • Dragon's Dogma 2 is getting about ~50 FPS in the troublesome city scenes, but this is with RTGI turned on so that's pretty impressive.
