Mammoth Monday Mood

  • Brush: Chisel and Hound Ambrosia Maple with 26 mm synthetic Maggard knot
  • Razor: Valet AutoStrop VC1 (1922-1929?)
  • Blade: Feather FHS-10
  • Lather: House of Mammoth Mood Indigo
  • Aftershave: Noble Otter Barrbarr
  • Fragrance: Mäurer & Wirtz Tabac Original Craftsman

Missed opportunity today:

As I noted after yesterday's evening shave, the blade is already done after 4 shaves, so I switched to a new blade mid-XTG pass, and the difference was impressive. Then it hit me: I have an AutoStrop razor, I should have tried stropping the blade first 🤦😅. Luckily, these blades seem to be garbage when it comes to edge retention, so I'll have another chance in about two shaves.

I would have expected an AutoStrop razor to handle this for you 🤔

AutoStrop: false advertisement for over a century.

I should have tried stropping the blade first

I admit, that the stropping part of the AutoStrop razor (that give it that steam punk look) is what I think is cool about its design. I have a feeling that stropping won't solve problems with that blade, though :)

[–] djundjila 2 points 1 year ago

The stropping part is cool and all, but have you seen how the blade and blade stops are aligned on this thing? I just love that click

I have a feeling that stropping won't solve problems with that blade, though :)

You're right, it won't. I mean, I'm gonna try, but only because it looks fun

November 20, 2023: Les lundis du Père Lucien

Fighting alliteration is pointless. Also, Terre d'Hermès goes well with Narcisse. Have a good night!

[–] gcgallant 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Oh, and going multi-lingual adds more possibilities. Tomorrow will be les Mardis du Mammouth I think :)

[–] djundjila 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Followed by mercredi du mammouth !

[–] gcgallant 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

As an American, I barely speak English, but the possibilities broaden when other languages are considered (as they should be). I can celebrate mercredi du mammouth and WestMan Wednesday.

[–] djundjila 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You have lots of Mammoth scents to get through, you can observe both mercredi du mammouth and Mammutmittwoch 🙂

I need all the help I can get 😁

BBS November to the rescue! 🦸

[–] gcgallant 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I am enjoying this much more than I thought I would. I've been taking extra time for each shave, but I'll have to return to my norm during the next few days. We're about to celebrate Thanksgiving here in the states [a fine holiday if you ignore its history]. It is tempting to minimize my participation so I have more time to shave but, alas, plans have been made. So it goes.

It is tempting to minimize my participation so I have more time to shave but, alas

This sentiment is more relatable for me than it should😂

Perhaps also "Southern Witchcrafts Sonntag"? 😅

[–] PorkButtsNTaters666 3 points 1 year ago

Don't forget the SW Samstag!

[–] gcgallant 2 points 1 year ago

Thank you! Now I can finally use my Zingari products :)

I'm not used to acknowledgements of Alemannic in this community. I feel seen ☺️

acknowledgements of Alemannic

Without a doubt, the best German.

  • Brush: Maggard 24mm Tuxedo Synthetic
  • Razor: Blackland Era - Level 3 SB
  • Blade: Polsilver Super Iridium (9)
  • Lather: Barrister & Mann - Promises - Soap
  • Post Shave: Chatillon Lux - Admiral - Aftershave

Promises is lightly scented. It's light and airy. Not my style but I'm sure some will like it.

  • Prep: hot shower
  • Brush: Yaqi 24mm Naples Tuxedo Knot (synthetic)
  • Razor: Gillette Slim Adjustable H3 (1962, 3rd quarter)
  • Blade: Lord Super Chrome (3)
  • Lather: Wholly Raw - Monaco Royale - Premium Shaving Soap
  • Post Shave: Wholly Raw - Monaco Royale - Artisan Aftershave Balm

I really love Monaco Royale, but for some reason I don't find myself using it as much as it deserves to be used. That will change this week, I'm traveling for Thanksgiving and this is coming with me.

  • Brush: Grizzly Bay Shire 26mm V18 Fanchurian

  • Razor: Wade & Butcher 7/8" Fine India Steel

  • Lather: House of Mammoth - Beloved - Soap

  • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Beloved - Splash

  • Post Shave: Thayers - Lavender - Toner

  • Talc: Pinaud Clubman

This razor has an edge that is less keen than most of my others yet it provides a very comfortable DFS shave easily. With an edge like this, there's an additional feeling of safety. I am aware that a lot of very experienced straight shavers prefer an edge that is not overly sharp. I have been struggling with this concept because my preference is for an edge that is extremely sharp but feels soft and velvety; and I only started to really crack that nut in September. There's a lot to learn.

So far this month I have used Hygge, Tobacconist, Alive, Indigo and Beloved. Before the month ends (and a benefit I get from BBS November), I will use 福 (Fú Dào), Shire 2, Smash, Sonder, and Almond Leather. Every HoM scent I have is distinctive, and I thoroughly enjoy all of them, but Beloved is, somehow, special. The scent recalls feelings of comfort, safety, and coziness. That's a pretty tall order for a shaving soap and splash. There's a subtle lavender note that some might not like, but I think it is perfectly placed. To me, this one's a masterpiece. Kudos u/mammothben!

Evening Freshness

  • Brush: Chisel and Hound Ambrosia Maple with 26 mm synthetic Maggard knot
  • Razor: Valet AutoStrop VC1 (1922-1929?)
  • Blade: Feather FHS-10
  • Lather: Stirling Soap Co Black Pepper Lime
  • Aftershave: Spearhead Shaving Company Seaforth! Sea Spice Lime
  • Fragrance: Chatillon Lux Yuzu/Rose/Patchouli

Very fresh shave tonight. One thing jumped at me after months and months of only using boar, badger, and horse brushes: Synths are damn good lather monsters. Paraphrasing u/J33pGuy13 (or was it @Old_Hiker@sub.wetshaving.social?): They have no soul, but they lather well.

I enjoy the cleverness of the VC1's design more than how well it shaves. A few more shaves to wow me and then it goes to the bottom of my rotation and we'll see it again in 2027 (or Lather Games 2024, depending on the Scavenger Hunt hashtags)

  • Brush: Grizzly Bay Shire 26mm V18 Fanchurian
  • Razor: Carbon Shaving Co. Cx-316L
  • Blade: Gillette 7 O'Clock SharpEdge (Yellow) (3)
  • Lather: House of Mammoth - 福 (Fú Dào)  - Soap
  • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Shire 2 - Splash
  • Post Shave: Thayers - Lemon - Toner

I'm getting really hooked on these evening shaves. Fú Dào is a very interesting scent that filled the bathroom during my two passes. I don't have the aftershave, but I'm pretty sure Shire goes with everything :)
