15.01.2025 - BVWSC in 2025

  • Brush: AP Shave Co. Snakeskin handle w 26 mm Silksmoke Flattop Fan hybrid knot
  • Razor: RazoRock Cyber Medium
  • Blade: Rapira Platinum Lux
  • Lather: Los Jabones de Joserra - Noir
  • Post-Shave: Moon Soaps Old School "balm"

-> 2 pass head shave, 1 pass on the neck.

First Buena Vista Wetshaving Social Club shave of 2025! Today we used a great european artisan in the form of LJdJ. I was already familiar with the base, as I already own Masala Connection from my exploration of european artisans last year. I know it's quite rich despite not getting a very thick and foamy lather.

Today's offering is a green scent, but without the usual "freshness" or cologne levels to smooth it out. No, this one was earthy, damp and a bit smoky. I couldn't make out any of the individual notes, but according to gcgallant's post, that might be just right. In any case, it kinda reminded me of the current times where people put their old Christmas trees on huge piles to burn them. Maybe that's an event only known around here, but I am pretty sure it's inspired by swedish traditions of the Knutfest. I certainly liked the scent, especially those smoky undertones. Plus activated charcoal is wonderful for my skin, so seeing someone use that in an actual good shaving soap is great. I can definitely see that getting more LJdJ is on the menu someday. Really great soap made by someone from the EU as a passion project.

I still have to admit though, I loaded the whole sample without any second thoughts and I don't regret it. This soap rewards heavy loading and seems to like softer water (mine's good enough to drink right from the faucet, a true luxury compared to other places).

Thanks! I guess it's a signal of my body that I am not doing enough to keep my back healthy.

There's unfortunately no clear distinction if bacteria or viruses are more contagious. There are some rather harmless viruses like rhinovirus - it causes a runny nose or in the worst case a common cold. Then there's stuff like Influenza or the Delta variant of Covid: very contagious and very lethal for vulnerable groups. Bacteria can vary from pretty mild to very harsh ones like MRSA.

You definitely did your due diligence by waiting so long and honestly, I really feel bad for you. Sounds like it's mostly bacterial or at least a lot of inflammation going on. I guess the doc suspects a superinfection - where bacteria lay on top of a viral infection, causing it to be a very drawn out affair (or in some cases deadly) like often seen with pneumonia. Hope you'll get well soon! ๐Ÿ€

I unfortunately have to chime in here with some nursing-related "well, ackshually ๐Ÿค“": if it's actually a virus but it's treated with antibiotics, this doesn't do any good. Perhaps only to prevent secondary infections with bacteria in the best case; worst case, it makes more germs resilient against antibiotics. The name "antibiotics" is kinda misleading. Antibacterial, yes indeed. But they do jack shit about viruses or even fungus infections.

A good way to determine if it's a viral or bacterial infection is funnily by taking a closer look at your snot: clear and transparent indicates virus, green or yellowish indicates bacteria.

Nevertheless I agree with gcgallant - hope you'll finally feel better! ๐Ÿ€

14.01.2025 - Blueberries

  • Brush: AP Shave Co. black & clear handle w/ 30 mm Tuxedo Fan
  • Razor: Leaf Thorn
  • Blade: snapped Rapira Platinum Lux
  • Lather: House of Mammoth - Indigo
  • Post-Shave: OAM witch hazel & cucumber toner; Alterra men natural ASB

-> 2-pass head shave. All around solid shave today, no irritation or discomfort.

I had a little craving for blueberries - recently I re-discovered a little liquid bottle that I bought during a Christmas sale with "blueberry cinnamon buns" aroma. Vaping that stuff kinda reminds me of Indigo, so I had to try that out. Oddly, there's nothing that I associate with Christmas when it comes to blueberry and cinnamon. It's usable all-year around for me personally.

But Indigo delivers. As always. I really think this is the more pleasant aroma with blueberries in it, but well - each are quite different mediums of delivery. Indigo is definitely darker, a bit more mysterious and smoky. Quite to my liking. Funnily enough, I have noticed now that I share the same taste for wetshaving fragrances/scents as I do with vaping e-liquids. My absolute favourite is something with tobacco in a unique blend; as well as anything dark, warm and heavy. Then come dessert gourmands: vanilla, chocolate, cookies and such. Props if it has a spicy edge. Perhaps at least equal to that, but not ahead of the dark/tobacco stuff are drink gourmands - cola, whiskey, gin and the like. Never ever too fruity and/or cloying sweet stuff. I guess my taste is an acquired one and not very easy, but at least unique.

I have somehow tweaked my back recently - it really sucks and just a few (sometimes odd) positions of sitting and lying down are without discomfort. I hope to get it back in working order soon - time to hit the foam roller again...

If Cuero Oscuro is chosen for March, I could include a sample of it in your letter - in case you actually want to try that and not just look to avoid that soap ๐Ÿ˜‚

A MeiรŸner Tremonia soap that tried to go for Scotch whisky. Please refer to the reply I gave @PorkButtsNTaters666 โœŒ๐Ÿป

MeiรŸner Tremonia - Strong'n'Scottish is the offender. They were probably going for the smoky, earthy notes of good Scotch - but to me, it only resembles the smell of smoked "Knackwurst" ๐Ÿ˜ฅ

[Mailcall] RazoRock Cyber & F-400 (sub.wetshaving.social)
submitted 4 weeks ago by DaveWave94 to c/wetshaving

Today a small mail call from the Czech Republic arrived at my place: a RazoRock Cyber Medium safety razor and a huge behemoth shaving brush (34 mm knot diameter!) in Ferrari red.

The all-aluminum razor looks very futuristic to me, in a Cyberpunk style even - I guess it's supposed to be a RR spin on the Henson, just for a way more affordable price. The top cap has way more sharp angles than the Henson though; very curious how this one will shave. My current guess is that it'll wear down DE blades faster due to the amount of tension it'll put on them. I picked the medium version in case I ever want to use it on my face/neck too.

The brush is now officially the biggest and tallest one I own - realistically, the only use case for it is head and body shaving, as this covers a whole lot of real estate. My intention is a traditional head shave in under 5 minutes and I think it'll serve well for this cause. Given that my other RR Rubberset handle brush is one of my most used ones, the handling should be great but we'll see. Only recommend this to head and body shavers with large hands though, so I guess no one else on this instance is interested. Having such a "freak" brush in the collection is cool though.

After all the stress surrounding my grandma's passing, I needed some "retail therapy". Yes, I know that's not an optimal coping mechanism; but here we are.

So since we had our first BVWSC shave with Abbate Y La Mantia soap, I was curious about the great soap quality and @djundjila@wetshaving.social mentioned that they transitioned fully to hard soaps. Even more curious, I was able to find the first soap in a german webshop that started their shift towards hard soaps: Blue Tobacco, a scent that spoke to me as a former menthol cigarette smoker. Originally, I only wanted some extra items to get free shipping - and then this happened. Clearly I've got no self control...

THE GOODS:

  • Abbate Y La Mantia Tobacco Blue (Blue Tobacco) shaving soap ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น
  • E&S Rasage Shaman shaving soap, plus 3 body soaps (Solstice , Barber and Azur) ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ต
  • HAGS Barberwood soap, witch hazel toner and beard oil ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท
  • Los Jabones de Joserra Masala Connection shaving soap ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ฆ
  • Saponificio Varesino sample pack (ALL of their aftershave balms, one beard wash and balm respectively plus a "Pro Victis" skin repair cream) ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น
  • MeiรŸner Tremonia Dark Limes beard soap ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช
  • Freebies: Proraso beard wash sample, some self-made thank you stuff and candy

Not going to talk about the body soaps and beard stuff, since this is a wetshaving instance. But I am really curious about the performance of all the shaving soaps! Blu Tobacco is really as I envisioned: a pack of (unlit!) menthol cigarettes on the beach. The aluminium tin is really nice. Shaman by E&S could be quite something for colder months, off the puck it's already dark. Barberwood is a take on a barbershop scent with lots of wood notes added, so a full set was a no-brainer. After my initial scepticism, barbershop scents have really grown on me in the last years. Finally, only from reading the notes on the label, I knew I had to get Masala Connection. It's kinda like someone had taken all of my favourite individual scent notes, threw them together in a fragrance oil and made a shaving soap out of it. Voilร ! Off the puck, it already smells divine. Never had anything by Los Jabones de Joserra before, but as I wanted to try as many european artisans as possible from different countries it made sense to me.

Even though I reside in Germany, I have to admit that I used more American wetshaving soaps than european ones. Unfortunately, artisans from "the old continent" tend to be overlooked. I'll try to put more of a spotlight on wetshaving software from the EU in my upcoming SOTDs... But needless to say, this concludes my wetshaving purchases for this year and the next year probably too. I can really recommend the seller AboutBodyCare though, very friendly thank you card, fast shipping and my package was even perfumed with E&S Solstice EdT.

Sorry, just now remembered to post our off-topic thread.

Share anything that doesn't necessarily need to be relevant to wetshaving: your weekend plans, recent events in your life, something interesting that's happened. Also music/movie/book recommendations are very welcome.

Bonus prompt question for those who can't think of something to say:
With warmer temperatures creeping up in the northern hemisphere, do you begin to use more mentholated soap/cream/aftershave in the summer months?

Bots seem to be asleep so I'm jumping in for them ๐Ÿ˜…

How was your week? Share everything off topic (or even cool shaving related stuff) you want to do this weekend. Any plans for traveling, concerts, movies? Music, film or tv recommendations? Personal stories of what's currently happening in your life?
We'd love to hear it here.

Short note: usually this thread is called Free Talk Friday or FTF for short. On the Reddit community, this used to be our "almost anything goes" thread. However, since we're a smaller community here I believe we can extend the thread for the whole weekend so no one must fear an empty thread when they miss posting on Friday.

YourShaving Anniversary Mail Call (sub.wetshaving.social)
submitted 8 months ago by DaveWave94 to c/wetshaving

Spanish vendor YourShaving had their 11th anniversary sale recently and today my order finally arrived in Germany.

Hardware

  • Omega Roma Colosseo 31 mm brush: this should now be my thickest brush together with the MOAR BOAR. It's definitely the most dense synthetic. Quality should be a (synthetic) hair under their famous EVO line, but already feels good in its dry state.
  • Leaf Shaving Thorn SE razor, fig colour: a safety razor that is said to be perfectly suited for head shaves and in one of my favourite colours. It's metallic purple, uses half DE blades and feels nice to hold.

Soaps

  • Barrister and Mann - The Full Measure of Man: a great tobacco-centered scent and it's in the Omnibus base. What more to ask for?
  • Ariana & Evans - Boca Negra: dark, spicy coffee is my first impression. Kaizen 2e base, we'll see how this performs.
  • Wholly Kaw - Transition: chosen by a combination of liking the scent notes, the artwork and the name. It's sweet and a bit gourmand off the puck initially, but not cloying. I hope the other notes come through a bit more once it is lathered.
  • HAGS - YourShaving special edition 11th anniversary soap stick: simply ordered to support them and because I never saw artisan shaving soap in the stick format. I actually would love it if this would become a regular thing, as sticks are great for travel and short trips due to their compact format. The scent? Initial impression is a combination of warm citrus and masculine aquatics. Think AdG mixed with bergamot and lime. Should be a good fit for summer.

Post Shave

  • HAGS - YourShaving special edition 11th anniversary aftershave balm: the balm is a nice creamy consistency, the citrus notes pop out a bit more here.
  • Moon Soaps - Old School post shave balm: consistency is definitely more of a lotion than a balm! Too thin IMHO. Scent is delightfully dark and leathery. Tested on my forearms, it made my skin feel really smooth. The pump mechanism has insane amounts of pressure though - careful not to get this stuff everywhere
  • Osma alum stone: the french gold standard for real alum stones, not just pressed crystals. Great for stopping nicks, weepers and cuts from bleeding.
