I could not miss an opportunity to have a Black Watchday. Also, I believe that Spearhead is in Ohio; a state that fought for the Union.

  • Brush: Alpha Shaving Works T-400 w/ AP Shave Co. - 24mm Synbad Fan #FRANKENBRUSH #RESURRECTIONBRUSH
  • Razor: Merkur Futur #ADJUSTABLE #FLIPTOP #ZAMAC
  • Blade: Bolzano Superinox (10)
  • Lather: Barrister & Mann - Promises - Soap
  • Post Shave: Summer Break Soaps - Woodshop - Aftershave

Barrister & Mann soap is made in New York, and the founder of the company says he splits his time between New York and Massachusetts. Double whammy!

I picked Promises because I bought a tub of it yesterday when it was on sale for $5. Now that I've spent money on it, the sample smells better. Funny how that works.

Woodshop is SO good. Get some.

I started on setting 4 with the Merkur Futur, and decided that anything above setting 3 and it ceases to be a "safety" razor. I turned it down to setting 1 for the final pass. It's funny to me that such an expensive razor is made out of a cheap material like zamac, but I think a razor of this design would simply be way too expensive using any other metal.

Yeah, the Futur is a funny combination of quality and shabbiness😅

I found it quite challenging in the beginning when I was new to DE razors, bit then my perception completely switched and it's a really fun razor now for me. Chattery, but delivering great shaves

Yes, very good shaves. I just have to keep it on the lower settings. It's actually sort of mild on setting 1.

  • Prep: warm water
  • Razor: Gillette King C. Gillette
  • Blade: BIC Chrome Platinum
  • Brush: Omega Roma Colosseo 31 mm
  • Lather: Hawkins & Brimble - Elemi & Ginseng shaving cream
  • Post Shave: Natura Siberica ASB gel

Awful AF shit head shave.

So my Feather Popular didn't arrive on time to take with me. Bummed, I bought a KCG yesterday... Worst decision ever. I don't know why Gillette thought it would be a great idea to release such a safety razor with a head geometry that's so extremely mild that it's actually inefficient as hell. I know, their target audience was probably the people who always used their cartridge razors and judging by some reviews out there, people actually managed to cut themselves. I mean, never rule out accidents due to inexperience. But the thing is, I am very experienced with lots of safety razors. I know how to shave my head with them, I know how to hold a good angle. I even used one of my own blades... Yet I still have "rows" on my head where it barely even shaved. Truth be told, I'd prefer my Remington dry shaver over this and that's not good! Imagine this is someone's first experience with safety razors due to these being widely available. I would've been appalled and immediately returned to cartridge razors. And well, perhaps that's Gillette's strategy with this product. I'm glad that I didn't try it on my harder neck hair. The result is as bad as the horrible Parker Injector and that's quite something.

Anyways, this shaving cream by Hawkins and Brimble had a high discount (2.50€ instead of 15.99€) and for such a bargain, it's really nice. I could probably even lather it without a brush and it'd work nicely while smelling great.

I missed Tuesday, and I kind of feel guilty about it. Very nice shave; I'm happy with the Russian Bear.

Have a good night!

Science with Fuck, Part 1

  • Brush: Rubberset 400-3 with unbleached 26 mm Zenith knot set at 56 mm loft #HOLLOW
  • Razor: Geneva Cutlery Co. Ontario 81 (5/8", full hollow, round point)
  • Lather: Barrister and Mann – Lavanille
  • Post Shave: Barrister and Mann – Beaudelaire
  • Fragrance: Barrister and Mann – Fougère Gothique

I recently got my hands on a set of Beaudelaire soap an splash, and I was immediately intrigued by this interesting scent, but struggling to make sense of it. So I did what I usually do when I need wetshaving-related information: I tasked the DjSIA with a survey of Beaudelaire reviews. One analysis by u/fuckchalzone immediately stood out to me and provided a possible key to solving the mystery. Fuck wrote

"Baudelaire, of course, is a fougere with Mousse de Saxe. Several times I've paired Lavanille soap with Baudelaire splash, figuring that they have Mousse de Saxe in common. But a funny thing happens: when I apply the splash, all I smell is fougere. I figure that over the course of the shave, my nose gets desensitized to MdS, so all it smells from the splash is what's left, the basic elements of a fougere. So I figured I'd test the theory and see if it worked the other way around: I used Varen soap, with its delightfully piquant fougere scent, and followed it with Baudelaire splash. And lo and behold, no fougere, all MdS. QED.

It's kind of like the nose version of this." - u/fuckchalzone

So I decided to execute a replication study, with today replicating the first part of Fuck's experiment. Lavanille (++) followed by Beaudelaire splash was a heureka moment. Beaudelaire turns into a bright green Fougère in my Lavanille-saturated nose. I'm looking forward to replicating part 2 of the experiment on Fougère Friday.

Theme: BaM was founded in Boston, MA, but seems to be operating out of Hartwick, NY now. In addition, the hardware is also on theme today: the straight was manufactured in Geneva, NY, and the brush in Newark, NJ.

Relevant post and frag: the post and frag are linked by u/fuckchalzone's science experiment going from MdS to Fougère with the Beaudelaire transition piece.
