  • Brush: Chisel & Hound Classic 26mm V23 Fanchurian

  • Razor: Dovo Facharbeit 6/8" Full Hollow Square Point

  • Lather: Barrister and Mann - Marilyn - Soap

  • Toner: Thayers - Lavender - Toner

  • Aftershave: Barrister and Mann - Marilyn - Aftershave

  • Fragrance: Barrister and Mann - Marilyn - Eau de Toilette

2 passes. Face lather. Excellent shave.

Marilyn is a haunting scent. It definitely has a way of triggering memories, but I'm not certain I would be as positive about it if I did not have the EdT.

Today's shave was a test shave for this razor. Here's the video. The shave was exceptionally close and, while I enjoyed it, I think most would find the edge to be "too sharp"; meaning that there's too much edge feel. I think that with a bit more stropping, the edge will develop a more gentle feel to it. For me, a full-on BBS shave that was very comfortable and that left the skin feeling good.

  • Brush: Maggard 24mm G5 Synthetic
  • Razor: Blackland Era - Level 3 SB
  • Blade: Dorco Prime (6)
  • Lather: Oaken Lab - Far Afield - Soap
  • Post Shave: Pinaud - Clubman - Aftershave
  • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Balm

Tub kill!

I probably should have just called it after yesterday's use, but I was still able to load enough soap so it wasn't bad. The lather just had lots of little tiny soap pebbles in it. Not the end of the world.

Far Afield is a nice scent, but not quite in my wheelhouse. It's an aquatic and it's a bit too "safe". I like some stank.

๐Ÿ Apples, Apples Everywhere! ๐ŸŽ

  • Brush: Stirling Soap Co. Green & Ivory 24mm Synthetic 2-Band Synthentic Knot
  • Razor: Karve Shaving Co. Overlander
  • Blade: Gillette Nacet [4]
  • Lather: Barrister and Mann - Braeburn - Soap
  • Post Shave: Summer Break Soaps - Teacher's Pet - Aftershave
  • Fragrance: House of Mammoth - Alive - Eau de Parfum

Apple notes are tough to do right without coming across as sickly gourmand or like Grandma's potpourri dish. All three of these scents do Apple really well.

The sample of Braeburn was unassuming and nearly invisible until I started lathering. Suddenly a burst of bright, green apple came out of nowhere and punched me right in the face. Maybe it's the sage that helped to dial the apple up to ten.

Teacher's Pet (R.I.P.) is very similar (even if toned down) to Braeburn. If you are missing Teacher's Pet, Braeburn might be an adequate substitute.

Alive incorporates an apple note without dwelling on it. It still remains a favorite HoM scent.

Rating: 4.5/5

I've had my eyes on Braeburn for a while, and I'm a sucker for teacher's pet. This

is promising.

Killing Varen

  • Brush: Zenith r/Wetshaving exclusive MOAR BOAR (31 mm ร— 57 mm bleached boar)
  • Razor: Weck Sextoblade Med Prep
  • Blade: Kismet Rostfrei, Polymer beschichtet (28)
  • Lather: Stirling Soap Co. Varen
  • Aftershave: Stirling Soap Co. Varen
  • Fragrance: Spearhead Shaving Company Seaforth! Heather

I'm very bad at killing tubs. I can't shake the irrational reluctance to finish a tub. For the same reason, I have about ten almost empty of bottles single malt that I should enjoy rather than preserve. But enough is enough and I'm embarking on operation Killing Varen. That Stirling Soap Co. is named after Stirling in Scotland provides the ancillary incentive to also kill the Scotches.

Great shave today. It doesn't get much better than a Weck shave with Varen. Now off to a day at the Zoo.

Sunday, April 7, 2024: Sunday Evening Shave

Another shave with the Barbarossa โ€“ which takes some time. A few months ago, I was complaining that straight razors have too long a blade โ€“ but shortness is not an answer to all problems.

Have a good evening!
