MODERATORS

Reddit has temporarily banned one of its communities - and removed another - after X owner Elon Musk claimed comments made by the site's users about his employees were breaking the law.

The r/WhitePeopleTwitter subreddit, which typically invites people to share funny posts from X, has been banned for 72 hours after some users posted comments calling for violence against members of the Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency (Doge).

They were responding to reports which suggested some Doge staff have been granted access to sensitive personal information of millions of Americans.

Musk - who frequently champions his commitment to free speech - shared a post on X containing the comments, and stated: "they have broken the law".

The subreddit was banned soon afterwards.

Yeah, he doesn't give a rats ass about the law. Or, more specifically, he only cares about the laws that protect him, but he doesn't give a rats ass about the laws that are meant to protect others, often from people like him.

Protect, but not bind, bind, but not protect.

Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.

Also from that post.

There is no such thing as liberalism — or progressivism, etc.

There is only conservatism. No other political philosophy actually exists; by the political analogue of Gresham’s Law, conservatism has driven every other idea out of circulation.

There might be, and should be, anti-conservatism; but it does not yet exist.

I'm not sure if this is your construction, but it's delightfully (and frightfully) succint.

Just lets Musk fuck Reddit right in front of him

[–] SacredHeartAttack@lemmy.world 17 points 4 hours ago

The complete thought policing of the internet is starting. All free speech absolutists are coming for free thought.

Reddit is slobbering all over the ring at this point

At this point you can shove an axle into Aaron Schwartz's grave and use his rotation to fully power the Earth in perpetuity. Again.

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 12 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

We need anyone who is still on Reddit or has an old account to get over there and let folks know that there is a great community here and we would welcome them!

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 13 points 5 hours ago (3 children)

I seem to recall plenty of Luigi posts being removed/locked here

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 10 points 3 hours ago

That's why we should be conscientious about directing communities to an appropriate instance. If they want to post about political violence, there's a place for that.

If they are LGBT, particularly trans, then blahaj is particularly well suited for example.

Just because I happen to be on .world doesn't mean I necessarily think it's the best place for every community. I would have to be pretty stupid to come to the Fediverse and oppose Federation.

[–] Kichae@lemmy.ca 15 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

There is no "here" here. They're being removed on some websites, and not on others.

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 8 points 3 hours ago

That's exactly right. Different instances will be more sensitive to different issues, but hopefully that means there's a place for everything.

There are instances where posting guillotines will be removed and there are instances where that's permitted but pictures of Winnie the Pooh might be removed.

If people want to talk about anti-authoritarian violence, there is lemmygrad, etc.

I'm more concerned with the fact that a lot of reddit LGBT and particularly trans communities were banned. That could never happen on blahaj.

I meant a certain instance on lemmy

Most of us are still operating under the assumption that rules still matter, even tho there is proof they don't.

It's hard to turn one's back on social order when chaos is screaming in our faces.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

You can not accept reality all you want, but it's still reality.

[–] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 hours ago

True. It's gonna take a minute for us to see it tho.
