Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

727 readers
589 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

YTPB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.

I came to this community to make a post about this. I am woefully pissed at our admin. I personally guarantee that their inboxes from email, to Mastodon, to the fucking BBS are completely full beyond reason. And it's so much worse than this little piece of the modlog. Ti my knowledge, everyone that is active on this instance is doing all they can. We desperately need at least a secondary, if not active admin. Thus is embarrassing.

I reported something pretty bad 8 months ago and it's still up, I sent another message to the main SDF hosting abuse email today and hopefully they might respond to that. They've ignored reports for more than a year, it's not a new problem.

[–] Rhoeri@lemmy.world 6 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

That instance is abandoned. There is no one running it. Trolls are now becoming aware of this.

[–] qaz@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

I'm not sure, it was last updated a couple days ago, so it's still being maintained. However, it does feel like there is only a sysadmin and nobody actually looks what's happening on the instance itself.

[–] Rhoeri@lemmy.world 1 points 21 hours ago

Pretty sure your instance was abandoned.

Star Trek Star Wars, spacey scifi, same bullshit.

Offending user indeed!

But seriously this individual is dumping toxins like a Capt Planet villain. I felt gross after scrolling their profile.

Thank you for your service 🫡

I've been trying to think of a post to his conservative community just to fuck with him even more, i'm having so much damn fun lmfao

[–] CorrodedCranium@leminal.space 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You could probably just post any news story about the ramifications of Trump's actions. See if the boots will still get licked.

[–] fxomt@lemm.ee 23 points 1 day ago

I posted this but it got removed, literally 1984

it’s worse than just that. SDF apparently had zero review process for creating subs and this user is abusing it to spam transphobia and violence. got about 30 reports in before they banned me tho ;3

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 22 hours ago

Other instances have review processes for new communities? Thought it was an exception not a rule to have? (I don't make comms haha)

[–] fxomt@lemm.ee 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Just reported all his posts for being "too woke" lets see how it goes lël

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 14 points 1 day ago (2 children)

ooh you’re the one they called a slur in the modlog im so sorry :(

[–] fxomt@lemm.ee 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm not gay, but i am arab and the fact he called me an islamist for posting an arabic meme is so funny to me. I've been loving fucking with him lmao

[–] lennivelkant@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What meme? Or did it get deleted

[–] fxomt@lemm.ee 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Its in the other PTB thread posted by me

[–] lennivelkant@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's... obscure, I guess, if I don't speak Arabic and less funny if I have to read the explanation without knowing the pun, but nowhere near offensive.

[–] fxomt@lemm.ee 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think what makes it funnier is how unrelated those two terms are. It's a quirk of the Arabic language and there's a whole class of these types of puns.

My favorite one is "bullying" and "the tigerization"

I think you might appreciate the German word "Scheinwerfer":

(The joke is that the word "Schein" can mean both the "shine" of a lamp or paper bills, and "Werfer" means thrower or caster. So a "shine-caster" aka light or a "bill-thrower" depending on how you interpret it.)

Thank you for sharing this beautiful culture with me

IDK what's up, but I can't even find that SayNoToNazis community anymore. The single post on there from a community member had a ton of removed messages when I found it.

I checked the mod log on my app and it isn't saying anything about my comment being removed. I had made a comment about how their post invited me to finally look up what their instance is all about and finding one sdf(dot)org, which lead to a rabbit hole as one of their listed members is apparently some Old Line Primitive Baptists group, who seem like a weird religious group to me (not cult like but not normal). Tried replying to a message on my comment, but it wasn't working. Reloaded the app thinking it's an issue on my end, and the whole post vanished.

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 7 points 1 day ago

Your instance may have taken action on the community.

[–] ocean@lemmy.selfhostcat.com 1 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I’m confused, is that instance for the right?

[–] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No SDF is a general purpose instance for anyone interested in Old Tech, Nostalgia, or Linux and Open source in general. It seems this asshole just managed to get in and start posting evil shit. Hopefully they ban his ass from there forever.

[–] CorrodedCranium@leminal.space 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I guess that's the unfortunate part about how Lemmy handles reports. They seem to go to everyone involved so if you are reporting content a moderator is posting they'll know.

[–] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Yeah I can't really say I'm surprised. I've known about this for a while now. I've asked Lemmy's Devs about having more granular report control or admin only reports for situations like this but they refuse to listen and instead just go on about shoulds and how community mods should manage their community.

[–] nutomic@lemmy.ml 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh, that's good. I apologize for coming off as harsh in that case. I remembered a situation where someone was arguing with me saying that it would be bad or useless since community mods need to run their own communities and shouldn't be bypassed. Glad to see its being worked on.

[–] CorrodedCranium@leminal.space 3 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

I hope we see some kind of change in line with what you suggested. With each instance and community having different rules most of the time reports are going to be situational.

If I am correct with the current report configuration if I ran a community with a no memes rule and someone reported someone's post for being a meme that would get sent to myself but also the admins of both instances for no real reason. It's only in times of egregious rule violations like the CSAM attacks that hit Lemmy a while ago or threats against a user that I could see reports going everywhere as being useful. Kind of like a panic button.

I'd also like to see the option to report communities. I don't think that exists right now and most people are doing it in whatever the meta community is on their instance. I get people might want a discussion before a community is removed or banned but I feel like more often than not it's just hate speech whack-a-mole where it isn't really needed.

I saw nutomic repsonded to your comment by the way. Glad to see it's being worked on.

edited post body to explain sorry for the confusion
