!asklemmy@lemmy.ml - ARE YOU A TANKIE? - informal poll results ~

😱A ridiculous question. β€œTankie” isn’t a term anyone self-identifies with, it’s mostly a term used by liberals to hurl at anyone to the left of them or anyone who agrees with western foreign policy. The survey results will be as meaningless as the term β€œtankie” itself.

this was fun, thanks for the polling idea, Kristina (I spent too long on these charts because yours looked so spiffy, I hope you specifically are impressed lol), solidarity cleaning that data up, and general reminder people only half read anything before launching into a diatribe

tl:dr yes, tankies are totally conspiring to make sure you have a bad time on lemmy.ml

specter

People who are downvoting this dont like to have fun

[–] PotatoesFall@discuss.tchncs.de 0 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Some of these graphs are just very hard to read even with the explanation another user gave

[–] TRexBear@hexbear.net 0 points 3 months ago

skill issue

[–] Tja@programming.dev 0 points 3 months ago (7 children)

I downvoted because after staring at it for 15 seconds I still had no idea what data it tried to transmit or what the message was. It's just a bad infographic.

Imagine being mad you can't understand a pie chart divided into two colours, imagine being mad at a joke. Have we all forgotten this is !memes@lemmy.ml ??

I literally made charts detailing that the majority of responses said they were tankies, and then I provided you the details.

Downvotes are for rule breaking content, not for covering your big feelings.

[–] NoIWontPickAName@kbin.earth 0 points 3 months ago

You’re a dick

[–] Tja@programming.dev 0 points 3 months ago

I'm not mad, I just tried to understand the meme and after a fair effort I didn't, so I downvoted because it was a poor meme.

I'm sorry the downvotes hurt your feelings.

For rule breaking content there is the report function.

Downvotes are for rule breaking content, not for covering your big feelings.

You're wrong about that. There's the report button for that.

By the way, I did not down-vote you, but about the criticism towards your work, yes, the info-graphics isn't well done, because you crammed all that in one single image. I was able to read it, but it was painful.

Another concern is the small dataset. It is in two digits, which isn't a proper representation of the general consensus.

[–] 10_0@lemmy.ml 0 points 3 months ago

Maybe we should ask the admins to send out a survey to capture a more general consensus as possible, sounds reasonable and within the scope of a meme post. Also how was OP supposed to post two separate images when Lemmy doesn't support multi-image posts? Was clicking on the image to enlarge it not an option for you?

[–] Yearly1845@reddthat.com 0 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Why are there like four sections each labeled "yes" and "no" with no other distinguishing information?

[–] 10_0@lemmy.ml 0 points 3 months ago (2 children)

"Are you a tankie?" Yes or No. Creates pie charts of the results.

Are tankies conspiring to repeat the "tankie is a meaningless term" mantra till someone believes them?

[–] linkhidalgogato@lemmy.ml 0 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

u can no more define tankie than you can define woke.

[–] Jean_le_Flambeur@discuss.tchncs.de 0 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Weird comparison. Someone who is authoritarian to a degree he sees using the army (tanks) against the own civilian population as a valid and legitimate action.

[–] TRexBear@hexbear.net 0 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (5 children)

Tankie: Someone who is authoritarian to a degree he sees using the army (tanks) against the own civilian population as a valid and legitimate action.

Serious question; does this include for example supporters of Israel today? Would someone who supported US action in Vietnam or Iraq or Afghanistan be a tankie?

edit: I just noticed "own civilian population" in your comment? Is the implication that you're not a tankie if you're only murdering innocent foreigners? Ironically the term 'tankie' was coined when Khrushchev sent soviet tanks to Hungary so were the original tankies not actually tankies?

What is your definition of a tankie

Tankie: Someone who is authoritarian to a degree he sees using the army (tanks) against the own civilian population as a valid and legitimate action. Sometimes used as slur by people against those measures (or generally highly authoritarian top down approaches of state theory) or as (positive) self reference by people in favor of such measures (or generally highly authoritarian top down approaches of state theory)

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 0 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I've seen Anarchists called "tankie" so at this point it either needs to be entirely redefined or done away with. Even suggesting people to read Marx can get you called a tankie these days.

[–] Jean_le_Flambeur@discuss.tchncs.de 0 points 3 months ago (1 children)

So if I call a car a giraffe the word giraffe looses its meaning and becomes invalid?

Misusage of terms doesn't cancel out the concept these words refer to lul

If it would in would just call my bake rolls fascists, so the fascists go away

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 0 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (6 children)

What is a "tankie?" Every person gives a different definition. It's like "woke."

The fact that Hexbear polled more no than yes is so fuckin funny to me.

[–] Dirk@lemmy.ml 0 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Why does that instance still exist? Wow.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 0 points 3 months ago (1 children)
[–] Dirk@lemmy.ml 0 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I've never seen any good content coming from that instance. Only political bullshit and fighting.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 0 points 3 months ago

It is a Left-unity server, with Marxists and Anarchists alike. It is going to be political by nature of the instance.

If you don't care for politics, the Games community is very pleasant IMO, and if you're trans, traa is hosted over there and it's a very active community. Hexbear is largely self-contained and self-sufficient, there's more than just politics.

[–] manuallybreathing@lemmy.ml 0 points 3 months ago (2 children)

hexbear is officially anti tankie, I don't make the rules. RIP

[–] CyberSyndicalist@hexbear.net 0 points 3 months ago

Fuck tankies, Khrushchev should have nuked Hungary

What is the top graph? It seems to be some combined thing, but I can't figure out what.

[–] velox_vulnus@lemmy.ml 0 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

It's a stacked/multi-level pie chart. If you read the single level, it highlights results for a single instance.

The first level is the overall tankie percentage.

The second level divides that between lemmy.ml and non-lemmy.ml instances. The third divides that between every non-lemmy.ml instances.

Oh, that makes more sense! Thanks

[–] manuallybreathing@lemmy.ml 0 points 3 months ago

Sorry its a bit confusing, its not serious though so its not worth stressing over

[–] MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works 0 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I've only ever seen people complain about them tangentially. Guess I'm not following the communities they usually pop up in

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 0 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Lemmy is going through an Anticommunist Red Scare right now, particularly on Lemmy.world.

All in all, "Tankie" is just the modern version of "Pinko!" I've seen Anarchists called Tankies, every manner of even non-L Marxists, non-Marxist Socialists, and more. It truly lost all of its meaning and is nust Lemmy's Red Scare.

A huge portion of that comes from Lemmy.world, which is the largest instance to defederate intentionally from Hexbear and Grad, which has the presumably unintended effect of making Zionists and other far-right wingers feel comfortable in an Anticommunist instance.

[–] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 0 points 3 months ago (1 children)

And apparently discuss.tchncs.de

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 0 points 3 months ago

What's their history?

[–] velox_vulnus@lemmy.ml 0 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (2 children)

lemmy.world has comments in their community, where they call for the nuking of developing countries, when they read news of social injustice. By that logic, their 'civilized' country should be nuked thrice, because cartoonishly evil, rich scumbags like Jeffrey Epstein and their associates still have a free pass for raping minors in their creepy sex-dungeons.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 0 points 3 months ago

Yep, it's disgusting to see.

Unintended may be somewhat true, in that nobody explicitly had that as a conscious reason, but it was an obvious result that they could've known beforehand. So I don't think it's useful at all to call it unintended. Just an easily understood and expected side effect

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 0 points 3 months ago

That's a fair enough critique. They definitely should have known what would happen, but this is more for the new users who came after defederation.

[–] Dippy@beehaw.org 0 points 3 months ago

I've never seen a set of graphs with so few labels for everything it was showing

I love this post, for next time can you draw some conclusions about the survey so I don't have to think to hard about these numbers, I can't count past 10.
