the techbros that think that with sufficiently advanced AI we could solve climate change are so stupid. like, we might not have a perfect solution, but we have ideas on how to start to make things better (less car-centric cities, less meat and animal products, more investment in public transport and solar), and it gets absolutely ignored. why would it be different when an AI gives the solution? unless they want the "eat fat-free food and you will be thin" solution to climate change, in which we change absolutely nothing of our current situation but it is magically ecological

I think that the dot com bubble is the closest, honestly. There can be some kind of useful products (mostly dealing with how we interact with a system, not actually trying to use AI to magically solve a problem; it is shit at that), but the hype is way too large

the thing is, the one and only purpose of this dialog is to increase metrics of engagement, like how many users download the app. they don't need to convert every mobile web user to an app user immediately. as long as that dialog is driving the engagement metrics apps, it is doing its work correctly. obviously at some point there will stop increasing engagement, so the middle managers will turn and try to squeeze a bit more by removing the loopholes, but it is not an urgent problem. it even might be intentional so they can squeeze a bit more later

the one that i am surprised at how bad it is is Twitter, that is still hosted at twitter.com . even going to x.com just redirects to twitter.com . i assume that there's some major engineering problem that is preventing them from switching, but still, it has been almost 10 months and the clown at chief really pushed for the rebranding

stories about lived experiences are more effective, but ultimately it depends on the person being willing to introspect and change their mind
