I don't know how to explain how awesome it is when you have some relief from debilitating pain. The drugs are mostly poison, but hey.

[–] SPRUNT@lemmy.world 8 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Have you tried cannibis? Heavy CBD topicals do wonders for my hands, a nice bit to smoke gives near-instant relief, and an edible or tincture helps the inflammation for a longer term. My wife uses hemp-derived salves and tinctures because she doesn't like the feeling of being high, and has been a daily user since the first time she tried. It hasn't cut the need for the rheumatoid meds entirely, but it's helped delay an increase in dosage.

I actually can't. It's an employment thing. I have tried it early in the process, but it's really hard for me to sort out what any individual thing does.

Crocheting is so much fun! Super cheap to get started with budget yarn and a cheap crocheting hook, and with all of the free tutorials on YouTube the sky is the limit.

[–] ickplant@lemmy.world 18 points 10 months ago (1 children)

What they're not telling is, before long you will be spending your whole paycheck on yarn. Soft, scrumptious, luxurious yarn. You think this won't happen to you, but it will. Just you see.

[–] Grayox@lemmy.ml 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Yeah about that.... I wilded out at Joanne's buying a shit ton of yarn they had on sale for Black Friday. Super excited to do a Temperature Blanket in 2024 though.

[–] ickplant@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Oh, how much I relate to this comment. I am also super excited for you to make a temperature blanket! Please show it off when it's finished - what crochet community are you a part of?

[–] Grayox@lemmy.ml 3 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

So stoked to get started on it, currently in the planning stage, haven't decided what stitch, yarn, or weight I want to use yet, but I'm pretty sure im going to use the daily High Temp. Not currently a part of any communities would love it if Lemmy had a crochet instance, but i dont have the mental capacity to create and moderate it, currently just watching YouTube tutorials to learn. I've only completed 2 shawls and a head band so far, but i just started a sweater vest with Caron Jumbo's peacock yarn using V stitches. First time winging it on a piece, so excited!!!!

Have you checked out crochet!crochet@lemmy.ca? They seem pretty active. And if you ever get into knitting, there is !knitting@lemmy.world. I'm so excited for you, I know that feeling when you are thinking of a big project, and it's starting to become reality!

[–] Grayox@lemmy.ml 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Thanks for the recommendations, just gave em both a sub!!!

[–] ickplant@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

Noice! I'm subbed to both, and I will be on the lookout for your blanket in a year!

I would like to get into it but I’m really nervous I’ll blow money on another hobby that doesn’t go anywhere or I’ll suck too bad to make anything. It just seems like magic that someone can fiddle with a needle and make shapes on purpose.

[–] ickplant@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago

Starting is super cheap - it really only starts to get expensive once you get into really nice yarns and make a lot of pieces, which you absolutely don't have to do. It's a lot of fun!

[–] Grayox@lemmy.ml 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Watch a few YouTube tutorials of easy crochet projects and just buy the bare essentials for that project. You can get what you need to make your own beanie for around $15. Its super easy to undo your work and start over from the point where you messed up. Personally its really good for my anxiety. I started it a few weeks ago and have already made 2 shaws, one for me and one for my partner and a head band. Currently working on a sweatervest and a beanie. Its seriously so good for my mental health cant recommend it enough.

[–] Waraugh@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Thank you, it sounds like the perfect hobby for what I’m looking for and I appreciate your advice and reassurance.

[–] Grayox@lemmy.ml 2 points 10 months ago

You are ever so Welcome!! It is literally the only thing that gets me out of bed on bad mental health days.

[–] Yamainwitch@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

I would put it out there to your friends/family that you're interested in trying it out, I've found my knitting/crocheting friends have their older and entry level supplies they will happy to lend or give away.

[–] kras@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

Holding and keeping tension is the hardest part so don't let that put you off if you start. This guy made a very helpful starting out guide and it's completely free. https://crocheting101.com/

One of my kids started crocheting like ... six weeks ago? She's been making little animals, keychains, hats, and is selling them at craft shows to fund a school choir trip in the spring. I'm absolutely amazed.

@snaptastic Please let me know if this comment meets your relevancy standards.

I have two cardigans and three hats on the go - desperately trying to finish them off before my next flare up!

[–] Yamainwitch@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

This is my sign to bust the needles I've had in my closet and give it a proper go, thank you!!

But Hulk smash!

[–] CaptnNMorgan@reddthat.com 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I was so upset when they shrunk the hulk hands

[–] Gargantu8@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)
[–] CaptnNMorgan@reddthat.com 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Hulk hands were bigger when I was a kid. They had his full wrist. I always wanted a pair but when I was making enough money to buy them for myself they were the garbage we see in the photo

[–] Gargantu8@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Aw what a disappointment! I'm sorry haha

[–] CaptnNMorgan@reddthat.com 2 points 10 months ago

Hahaha yeah, it was. You can buy the originals on eBay for like $70 or something but I can't justify that purchase 😂
