could be that the friend was phished out of their account, I think something similar goes around on Facebook

Yes possible, happens somewhat frequently.

One of contacts suddenly become an atractive looking asian woman and owner of some company. Both of which were extremely unlikely based on my recent conversation I had with him.

Many scams are intentionally sloppy to filter out attentive or suspicious people. It saves time.
