Summary

Russia criticized Trump’s proposal to provide military aid to Ukraine in exchange for access to its rare earth minerals.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov condemned the idea as a commercial transaction rather than genuine support and reiterated Russia’s stance that halting aid would help end the war.

Trump argued that securing Ukraine’s resources, including titanium and lithium, was in U.S. interests.

While Ukraine has not responded, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz denounced the plan as selfish, noting Ukraine's need to retain resources for postwar rebuilding.

That's cute, coming from the country currently invading and attempting to annex huge swaths of Ukraine.

[–] SinningStromgald@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago

Huge swaths? I thought they wanted the whole thing?

Did you hear Trump talking about rare earth, "We need that rare earth" WTF? He has NO idea what rare earth minerals are. He really is a kid with a word of the day calendar but refuses to read the definition of the word he is using.

Rep from heritage foundation: "alright you've got a press conference in 20 minutes. Just keep saying rare earth, say we want it, and we'll give them weapons for it. You're a champ, here's a gold star"

Trump became a monster that got away from the Republican Party, now watch as he turns on his handlers too. His ego will just continue to grow and he’ll think he’s unstoppable.

Thinking of Trump as "controlled" by Russia has always been an obviously bad idea. It's not how things work.

I honestly don't hate this idea entirely. Especially if it means actually raising our support for Ukraine. Putin will be furious and release everything he has on trump.

Ukraine was the the #1 reason I voted for Kamala. And Trumps demand for "rare earth" is the best news I've heard in 2 months.

Ukraine's resources were always going to be part of the calculation. I read this as Trump gross way of acknowledging that abandoning them is against our interests and signaling to his supporters a justification for the 180.

It also shows that there may be a way to work with the shitgibbon from Europes perspective, even if it is problematic. They can still get him to a beneficial position.

Sheinbaum was right in that you need to figure out what HIS facts are, and then lie to him from there.

I expect Trump et al to retcon the initial demand/“negotiation”, tbh

Hmm, so now I understand one of the many reasons Russia has been going so hard in Ukraine. Not only do they want access to their ports. But they want access to their rare earth minerals. It's all making sense now. Fucking clowns.

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 6 points 17 hours ago

Rare earths have approximately the same concentration everywhere. Both the US and Russia have way more of them than Ukraine.

It's hard to understand what crazy idea Trump has about them. Maybe it's just an excuse for the 180º turn.

[–] HappySkullsplitter@lemmy.world 7 points 19 hours ago

That's fine, I'd rather have Russia's anyway

HA! Russia see's trumpo trying to eat their lunch too... Unless; this is their buddy buddy way of starting ww3. Stay tuned to find out what the Republicans will do with the level of power the Democrats allowed to exist because they wanted it for themselves...

Russia suddenly realizing the guy they been funding all these years is no longer playing for their team. 😆
