Having lived at both ends of the spectrum, I would gladly go back to being broke and free. The family, not so much.

Heh I know what you mean, I would 100% have gotten a truck and camper or something by now lmao

The system traps you within. Breaking away from it can be a difficult venture and cannot be done completely without some retribution from the system itself. They'll punish you for it to some degree and people have even been killed over it.

But yes, vanlife (or off-grid living) can liberate you to be potentially happier. At the very least unencumbering oneself from the odious monthly outlay just to live helps a lot. I don't choose to do this (yet), but have friends that exist this way.

Yeah it made me a lot happier. Wouldn't live in a city or suburbs again even if the rent was free. I started out fully nomadic in 2017 but now I stay put most of the time. I'm currently scouting for land to build a cabin to stay in year round.

I'm an older adult on the spectrum and being out in nature, away from all the people, and a simpler life has dramatically bettered my mental health so I'm looking to make it permenant. I don't like the unanchored feeling and routine distruption that comes from the nomadic process.

Only thing I can see trapping me is medical cost and insurance

All part of the system. Stay healthy, friend!

I split a camper van w a friend. We’ve both utilized it while unemployed, which thankfully wasn’t overlapping. The temptation is strong when I’m super overwhelmed w work and life

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 3 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Just stop paying them! Simple.

Well, I did find a nice rock that works as a pillow. And look here, a nice bridge to sit under.
