Day 17/31 of Looking for Serenity in Austerity

  • Brush: Semogue Owner's Club (cherry wood and boar) (17)
  • Razor: Zwilling J. A. Henckels Friodur 50 (7/8", hollow ground, stainless steel, masonic deco) (15)
  • Lather: Spearhead Shaving Company – Seaforth! Roman Spice
  • Post Shave: Spearhead Shaving Company – Seaforth! Roman Spice
  • Fragrance: Spearhead Shaving Company – Seaforth! Roman Spice

I'm in the phase of AA where routine has taken over. My lather is great, the brush is breaking in nicely, and the edge is still comfortable. The edge refresh weekend of HoneMeisterschaft comes just in time to make things interesting again.

I'll try to find a moment tonight after Djunior's bedtime to give the Frio a fresh new edge for the remainder of August, and I'm looking forward to reading the other HoneMeinsters' pets about refreshing their edges and the difference it makes.

give the Frio a fresh new edge

Have you noticed much change in the edge over time?

[–] djundjila 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

No, not at all. There were the first two or so shaves when I thought the edge changed (smoothed out or settled), but that might also just be getting used to the new edge. Nothing after that.

I still expect to get a difference from the refresh, though. At least I hope so, or else the next HoneMeisterschaft will have to be a 2 month challengeπŸ™‚

Your no strop project seems to show a bit of edge deterioration, if I read your SOTDs right.

Ot made me think that I'd like to try a direct comparison using two razors with similar edges and steel and use them alternatingly, stropping one but not the other until a difference manifests. Might take a while, though.

The edge has become more comfortable over time, and closeness has just started to diminish but it's a very small change that I only notice hours after the shave. I think that Str8_Razor is having a similar experience. I'm thinking that this is wear resistance of the steel.

17.08.2024 - Shaman Head Shave

  • Prep: cold water
  • Brush: RazoRock 400 Noir SE 24 mm
  • Razor: Leaf Thorn
  • Blade: snapped BIC Chrome Platinum
  • Lather: E&S Rasage - Shaman
  • Post-Shave: Moon Soaps Old School "balm"; Phytorelax Aftershave scalp cream

-> 2 pass head shave, 1 pass neck cleanup. Very comfortable shave.

Second use of E&S Shaman soap - still a very nice scent, but it takes noticeably longer to get a good lather going with it. It requires a really wet brush and the lather also has a slightly brown tinge to it. Scent is a real banger though, definitely up there with the good tobacco fragrances. Today something that smells like plum stood out to me, but since there's not a single mention of plum in their official scent notes, it might have been the combination of something else. Overall though, it's not really suitable for the current warm season and should feel much better once fall/autumn weather hits.

Head shave musings: a) I really get my best results from two pass shaves, anything more would be useless - a single pass shave is serviceable, but delivers the same results as my RX5 dry shaver. So if I have the time, I should always opt for two passes.
b) using two balms is uncommon, but since the Moon Soaps one has the consistency of a toner, it felt natural. Still will be the last balm by Moon that I get - I actually prefer scented toners and 'common' aftershave balms (well, not as common as drugstore stuff but rather the less-artisan stuff) c) I actually looked up Yul Brynner's shaving routine again and really found some pics that showed him shaving his dome with a straight razor in front of a mirror. So yes, the man was really a fucking bold head shaver. I only did it once with my KAI shavette loaded with a guarded blade and even that was intimidating. Much posthumous respect to Yul!

Edge Condition Album

Here we are 17 days without a hone or any stropping and, if anything, the edge is more comfortable than it was a week ago. Closeness is very slowly diminishing, but I can only tell this 4 to 5 hours after the shave. I continue to be astonished. I mean, why bother honing or stropping at all?!

What a great razor.

I purposefully loaded what felt like "less soap" today, and it still came out to 2.6 grams. The lather was ok, not the quality I'm accustomed to. My average is holding steady at around 2.9 grams per shave.
