How do they make these when there aren't sets? Do they just kitbash it all together from other sets? I ask, because finding that many of the exact colour from several kits would be really expensive. Or can you just order what you want from Lego and go from there?

I made a MOC with about 5k pieces by designing it in Stud.io using the marketplace feature to make sure I didn’t pick any pieces too rare/expensive.

Once designed, I used BrickLink to efficiently buy the pieces from ~20 storefronts in US+Europe.

The article hinted at one of the difficulties which is you can end up choosing rare colors and then it’s hard to get the parts.
