There's unfortunately no clear distinction if bacteria or viruses are more contagious. There are some rather harmless viruses like rhinovirus - it causes a runny nose or in the worst case a common cold. Then there's stuff like Influenza or the Delta variant of Covid: very contagious and very lethal for vulnerable groups. Bacteria can vary from pretty mild to very harsh ones like MRSA.

You definitely did your due diligence by waiting so long and honestly, I really feel bad for you. Sounds like it's mostly bacterial or at least a lot of inflammation going on. I guess the doc suspects a superinfection - where bacteria lay on top of a viral infection, causing it to be a very drawn out affair (or in some cases deadly) like often seen with pneumonia.
