Lots of firmware and driver updater programs seem to require Windows or Mac and I can't get them to run with wine. For example, I need Win to update the firmware on my car stereo and my 8bitdo game controllers. I also need it to run the tax software my CPA uses.

Can you use an adblocking DNS provider to circumvent this?

I agree that it's a bad recommendation. That was my first distro and the dated look was a huge turn off and a bad first impression for Linux. It just feels like a downgrade from Windows or MacOS, which makes for a terrible transition.

What Mint offers that many other distros don't is that it generally works well right out of the box, with just the initial install and no other tweaks, because it has proprietary drivers and other bells and whistles pre-installed. But so does Zorin and Pop_OS and both look much better. Those would probably be my top recommendations for a new user. All 3 of those distros have lots of online support (plus the general Ubuntu support that will usually be applicable as well).

Very interesting. Thanks for taking the time to run these tests and share your results!

I have been looking for a replacement for Nova due to the sale but haven't found anything that comes close re gestures. I can set up a folder with any icon I want. Tap on it and it opens the folder. Swipe up on the folder and it opens whatever app I want. Same with swipe down.

So for example I have a folder with my audio apps in it that looks like a musical note. Swipe up and it opens my music app. Swipe down and it opens my podcast app. Tap and it opens a folder with all my audio apps. It's amazing and such a time saver. I'm gonna try Action. Sounds like it's not quite as customisable but hopefully close enough.

I'm not sure what that's about. I tried with lemmy.one and had the same issue. For me it works great with lemm.ee and lemmy.world. Guessing it's a big that's hopefully getting worked on.

I just switched from connect to Liftoff. I am liking Liftoff better. Looks nice and I like that comments collapse with one tap, and up/down vote arrows and the reply button are all shown in the comments as a default (rather than having to tap or swipe to see the arrows).

Liftoff also has better formatting options. Here are a few screenshots:
