Got problems at home? Time to Bomb Bomb Bomb, Bomb Bomb Iran...

Got problems overseas? Time to Bomb Bomb Bomb, Bomb Bomb Iran...

Look how it easy it is to solve problems, when your ass isn't on the front lines! /s

Man the American feds are on a roll lately in terms of rooting out corruption.

Threats of violence are inappropriate, but you can't force anyone to like you enough to help you start your club.

Not sure why any professor at FAMU would wish to align themselves with today's Republican parties of Florida and US. Rejecting affiliation with the likes of Governor Ron DiSaster is free speech.

I wish Ms. Lane well, I'm sure that she'll have a great career ahead of her as a token black woman at Fox News.

Hey Mr. Kimura, where should we build our new airport?

Mr. Koizumi, we have a big plot of empty land over here, do you remember why we haven't built anything there yet?

... No?

... Okay!

Expectation: it doesn't work well at all

Result: It kinda works?

I remember using Reddit years ago on Links. New Reddit was borderline unusable, old Reddit worked... okayish. How is Default web UI Lemmy on Links? Is there a nice TUI client that I guess you would use more regularly?

I mean it's safe to say it was probably the last opportunity to do a protest on that scale even before these changes. Maybe they can still do "remove any post on wellthatsucks that isn’t a vacuum" type of change.

Probably old Reddit imploding will bring a few more this way, but safe to say that most people who left Reddit because it's changed for the worse since 5-15 years ago have already left. Still, I have seen a few new users join Lemmy after TechLinked mentioned the site and a continuous trickle would be welcome.

On another note, hearing the "council of Reddit moderators" makes me imagine a cringeworthy meetup in someone's basement.

I think this idea is good. I remember seeing those domain names last year. At the time it seemed muddy and uncomfortable to me, since there was a whole scheme of Reddit ghost accounts posting, while I understood there were good intentions behind it, mirrored posts were flooding users' All feed to the point I started blocking a bunch of subs, and many admins defederated.

If we can promote the community first approach where the domain is the space for discussion to be held and stored, with users connecting from across the Fediverse, this would be excellent, a good alternative to massive centralized Lemmy servers. Collective ownership would ensure preservation of content if one or more go offline.

Compared to other national and international chains, I'll pick Dominos. Here in Vancouver there are just so many local pizza shops and smaller chains to choose from, even the cheaper/quantity over quality chains taste better than both Pizza Hut and Domino's (I'm thinking Freshslice for the Western Canadians in the room). Even corporate pizza events here don't go with Domino's, which was the go to when I was elsewhere.

People think vice presidential candidate Tim Walz is nice. But is he... too nice? From his dangerously folksy upbringing, to the National Guard, to teaching America's future enemies in China, Tim Walz's "nice" act isn't fooling anyone. This is the Dailyshowography of Tim Walz.

Some Lemmy user at one point had asked about a "multi-paste" feature, if there was a way to use keyboard shortcuts to display multiple clipboard items and copy/paste them out at will (this user mentioned similar to RTS games they like to play). ~~If someone can find that post, can you notify them and direct them here, please? I'm having trouble locating it but I recollect that it was within the last 3 months.~~ Edit: I found the post!

Somehow this was stuck in my mind when I accidentally pressed a keyboard shortcut, that showed my last 5 copied items. This isn't exactly what the user was looking for but I thought I'd publicize it here.

If you use Fcitx (because you need multi-language input) from the fcitx5 packages, then you may already have installed the clipboard add-on. You can use fcitx with just one keyboard layout. By default, it's activated by Ctrl+semicolon and shows the 5 last entries, but the number can be configured.

Here's a table I adapted from Louis Rossman's video on the levels of piracy, grey areas and his morals and ethics on it. (spreadsheet file)

I tried to condense each rank and make it less about a specific type of media like CD audio or DVD video, along with a table of simplified characteristics of each situation. Of course more levels can be added and there are many situations not covered. This hierarchy is simply the way Louis ordered it from more to less justifiable; he respects people can think about it differently and I do too. He suggests that he doesn't really care about people that pirate without giving a shit about creators, and that he only has a problem with people who aren't honest with themselves about their motivations.

Setting legality aside, what 'level of piracy' is morally or ethically acceptable to you?

Railroad Workers United (RWU), a caucus of rank-and-file workers spanning all thirteen national rail unions, recently released a video offering one answer to the rotten state of US rail. “Putting America Back on Track: The Case for Public Rail Ownership” opens in East Palestine, with a resident of the area showing the viewer photos he took the night of the Norfolk Southern derailment. The video goes on to make the case for public ownership of rail, which has been a focus for RWU over the past year.

What are your thoughts on the idea of public ownership of rail (in the US and Canada)? What type or level of public ownership would you support?

Comments due tonight at 2359 EST, 2059 PST. It's about waivers to the Buy America plan for High Speed Train components. Probably have a look through this video before submitting a comment, as it shows the important parts of comments other companies have put and (Armchair Urbanist) Alan Fischer's suggestions on commenting.

Network Rail enployee Zoe Sookun has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to the railway through her work in project managing the delivery of the Rail Aid for Ukraine project.

Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) made a passionate speech at the annual general meeting of the International Union of Railways, praising Network Rail and the DfT as the only organisations providing practical help. The railways are vitally important in Ukraine, with 60% of freight transported by rail.

Freight Rail Highlights:

  • Canadian Freight Rail volumes YTD are down 1% compared to the same period in 2022.
  • Two of ten key financial and operating metrics improved compared to the same period last year, two remained unchanged, and six worsened.
  • Train weight and length were reduced to accommodate softer traffic volumes while maintaining scheduled train operations and service levels.
  • The B.C. port strikes disrupted supply chains and likely contributed to the observed 6% increase in average rail terminal dwell.
  • 5% reduction in freight revenue per RTM and a 9% increase in the average operating ratio.
  • Class 1 employment was up 4% and they invested nearly $1.7 billion into their assets – a $500 million (43%) increase compared to Q3-2022

Passenger Rail Highlights:

  • Q2-23 (latest available data), tourism expenditures on passenger rail, which are a function of both ridership and pricing, were up 14% compared to Q2-19.
  • Urban transit ridership continued to improve, and in August 2023, was sitting 19% below pre-pandemic levels, from a pandemic trough of -84%.
  • In Q2-23,2 VIA Rail ridership increased by 31% year-over-year, reaching just 16% below pre-pandemic levels.
  • In Q3-23, Amtrak ridership for routes with segments in Canada increased by 62% compared to last year and was within 6% of its Q3-19 (pre-pandemic) level.
