Where does the name come from?

It was nameless for a long time, but I wanted to keep with the fediverse tradition of naming projects after animals. I was playing that old-school game Lemmings, and Lemmy (from motorhead) had passed away that week, and we held a few polls for names, and I went with that.

Then it derives from the reason, Lemmy Kilmister was called that, too. He was constantly broke and asked everybody "can you lemmy a fiver?" I can relate.

That original post is a good read. I can't say I agree with all of @Dessalines@lemmy.ml, political views, but I'd like to think Lemmy is more than that.

After all, people can live and respect each other in the same community even if they have different political ideologies, as long as the values relevant to being in the community are common, and I think most of us here share that: we don't want to be at the mercy of big tech companies to decide how we communicate. Having a public forum is a matter of the common good.
