I have mixed feelings.

On one hand, it's nice to have something familiar.

On the other hand, Sync was basically reddit for me, and I'm having something of knee-jerk reaction where I feel like I should be using something "fresh" that doesn't remind me of my time on reddit.

Like, I don't actually want Lemmy to feel like a straight up drop-in replacement for reddit. I want it to feel unique.

I like some of the other apps, but none feel "there" yet. Might just stick with the web app for now.

(Also, not open source. I trust the dev, but I just want to be able to install shit from F-Droid or Izzyondroid or whatever instead of relying on the Play Store. I understand the decision and don't hold it against him at all, but it's something I've always disagreed with.)

I used to equate Sync with Reddit too, but now I have a different perspective.

Reddit is nothing but a glorified link aggregator. Sync was my preferred way of viewing said list of links. Now that I have the exact same experience on Lemmy I've realized that Sync wasn't Reddit, it was link aggregation and where those links come from doesn't really matter.

It's kind of poetic because that's the promise of Lemmy. It doesn't matter where the links are hosted.

No problem, use Liftoff.

[–] wim@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Even if you don't end up using it, if it enables more users to find their way to Lemmy, we all benefit.

I never really clicked with Sync for reddit, and trying it for Lemmy, all the acknowledgements and agreeing with privacy policy really rubs me the wrong way for a Fediverse client. But if it works for others I'm all for it.

[–] comicallycluttered@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Oh, yeah. Definitely agree. I'm really glad that it's back and I'm happy for the dev and the users who love it, but I think maybe it's just not for me anymore, despite me using it exclusively for reddit for almost a decade.

Thankfully, we're getting more and more options as time goes on. And quickly as well. Wasn't expecting a public release of Sync this soon, so it's good to see more and more clients coming out.

Use sync but switch up your theme!

[–] LallyLuckFarm@beehaw.org 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Sync is back in its rightful place on my device home screen, only now it points me at Beehaw. Things are looking up.

[–] jonsnothere@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah, this feels like coming home. I tried the other options, but none felt as smooth or as customisable as this.

[–] Satiric_Weasel@beehaw.org 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's so good to be home T_T

[–] Frederic@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Oh yes, I bought it, like I did for RedditSync 10 years ago

[–] d4rko@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago

Man, I wish Relay had a Lemmy version.

It's nice to see sync back but going to wait until they introduce one time payment to remove ads before I start using it. Will stick with browser and Foss options until then.

[–] fox@beehaw.org 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

The one time IAP is now live $19.99 plus tax

The amount of time I'd spend in Sync for Reddit daily, this was a no brain purchase for me.

[–] Frederic@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

same, nice to see this meme 😎

[–] andrew@lemmy.stuart.fun 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Heads up he just added that to beta 25 which is now available on the play store.

Or it's going to be available soon? I'm actually not sure the status as I've updated but still only see the two options, but his recent comments indicate he's added that.

Ah, found it. If you're not subscribed to ultra there's a separate "remove ads" option that you pay separately for.

[–] comicallycluttered@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Incredibly fucking expensive in my location. I don't know if it's defaulting to the subscription or something, but it's about 15x cost of my Pro purchase from several years ago.

[–] can@beehaw.org 0 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

For ultra or just the ad removal?

[–] comicallycluttered@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

When I clicked the "Remove ads" option, so not Ultra. It's possible they're linked, which would explain the price.

[–] ffolkes@fanexus.com 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

$20 to remove ads, $100 for Ultra.

[–] comicallycluttered@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah. In my location, it's a bit closer to $25 when taking forex into account.

[–] Reil@beehaw.org 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ooh, nice. I hope this means Boost for Lemmy's release isn't that far behind!

[–] overlordror@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

This is the one I'm excited about. I switched from Sync to Boost and never went back as a redditor.

[–] Rudith@beehaw.org 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Do any of the apps work with kbin yet? I couldn't get sync to. 😕

[–] Zana@startrek.website 1 points 1 year ago

There isn't an API for it to connect to yet.

[–] silentdon@beehaw.org 0 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I'm not sure if this was how it worked for reddit but it makes you set it up when first opening, then again when adding an account, then again for each new account. There don't seem to be any global settings so you have to manually copy settings for each account. This makes it kind of a pain to set up how I want.

[–] comicallycluttered@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah, it was the same with reddit. Common complaint.

Quickest way to deal with this is Settings > Backup > Backup now. Log out/sign in into new account, Settings > Backup > Restore from backup.

Since all the backup does is save local user settings, it won't affect any accounts or anything like that.

[–] silentdon@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago

I haven't used sync in years so I didn't know this is how it always was

[–] Itsamelemmy@lemmy.zip 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That can actually be a good thing. In reddit, I'd set the accounts up slightly different so I knew what account I was logged into. Basically, my main was amoled and alt account was dark gray. Easy way to distinguish what account you're using.

[–] silentdon@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

I get you and I actually agree. But I think it might be easier to have option somewhere that applies current settings to other accounts.

[–] DarkThoughts@kbin.social 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Unsurprisingly the same issues as the Reddit app. The fonts are all over the place, the layout is kinda weird and the thumbnails are tiny.

[–] jetsetdorito@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I really didn't like sync before, but gave it another try and really customized the UI and like it a lot now. The default font is so tiny

[–] DarkThoughts@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I still don't like it, doesn't look like there's any new options either. Luckily I just found out that someone forked Infinity over, which was my second favorite Reddit app, and it is FOSS.

https://codeberg.org/Bazsalanszky/Infinity-For-Lemmy/releases

[–] sarsaparilyptus@beehaw.org 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Too bad Infinity has that weird fixation on not marking posts as read persistently, it would be great if not for that.

[–] DarkThoughts@kbin.social 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] sarsaparilyptus@beehaw.org 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It was like that because of a deliberate design choice that enjoyed widespread support

[–] DarkThoughts@kbin.social 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

What design choice exactly? You can always fork it if you want to.

Edit: I just tried and the hidden posts all seem to stay hidden even after restarting the app. What exactly are you missing / is your problem?

[–] sarsaparilyptus@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Infinity was originally a Reddit app that has been forked. This came up more than once:

"This is intended".

Maybe that's different now, but normal people don't pay attention to feature upgrades on open source projects that they don't use, and the fact that this was intended behavior led me to believe there was no particular reason it would ever change, especially since it still hadn't when I last used the app some time after the dev commented in the second screenshot.

[–] DarkThoughts@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I know that it is a fork of a Reddit app, I'm saying you can make your own fork and implement features you think are better that you know aren't going to be part of the main project. That's the beauty of FOSS. You are also conflating two different issues here. The first example is about using multiple devices. What that person wants is that they hide the submissions not just locally but through Reddit on the account level, so that they would be hidden even on other devices (like the desktop or for some reason a second mobile device). The second issue is something I just tested in between my comment and the edit and I did not see the postings that were hidden even after restart & refreshing. It's also something they didn't say is impossible or would be unintended, but rather said that it is indeed possible.

[–] sarsaparilyptus@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Is this a studied effort to miss my point, or are you just like this?

[–] DarkThoughts@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You're the one who missed my point, so your reply is as empty as it is ironic.

[–] sarsaparilyptus@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The fact that you're able to think that is all I need to hear, you're officially beyond my power to help. Good luck, you're going to need it.

[–] DarkThoughts@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah, yeah. Stop projecting. Thank you.

[–] Whirling_Ashandarei@beehaw.org 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Can anyone compare to Jerboa? Been using it and it's pretty solid, but heard sync is great.

[–] Limeaide@beehaw.org 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I've never used Sync before, but something worth noting is that it isn't open source, and there are ads and in app purchases according to the google store page

As long as the IAP is to remove the ads, we're good lol. I don't mind paying for that, esp for something I'll use a lot.
