Hello fellow Far Side fans!

About this community and how I post the comic strip… Many moons ago, I would ask my Dad to save the newspaper for me everyday so I could read my favorite comic strips and one of those was The Far Side. These days of course you find just about anything online including www.thefarside.com where they post several comics a day and I repost them here. Just to note, the date you see in my posts is not the initial release date, but the date they were posted on the website.

The Far Side is a single-panel comic created by Gary Larson and syndicated by Chronicle Features and then Universal Press Syndicate, which ran from December 31, 1979, to January 1, 1995 (when Larson retired as a cartoonist). Its surrealistic humor is often based on uncomfortable social situations, improbable events, an anthropomorphic view of the world, logical fallacies, impending bizarre disasters, (often twisted) references to proverbs, or the search for meaning in life… Read more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Far_Side

Hope you enjoy and feel free to contribute to the community with art, cool stuff about the author, tattoos, toys and anything else, as long it’s The Far Side!

I must be dumb because I look at every single one of these and I haven't seen one that is even slightly funny

[–] highenergyphysics@lemmy.world 26 points 11 months ago (2 children)

It’s boomer humor, but without the hate

The entire joke is that the boxes should have washed up before the stranded person died

I remember these being pretty funny as a kid which explains the lead addled mental state of Gary’s audience at the time

Irony is dead!

[–] blazeknave@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Tf are you talking about? I'm 40 and grew up with these with younger kids doing the same well into our childhoods.

Maybe the joke is the time between ordering and delivery? I don't really get it

[–] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 21 points 11 months ago

Nah, just raw irony.

[–] buycurious@lemmy.world 10 points 11 months ago

This one is kind of sad!

[–] 21Cabbage@lemmynsfw.com 9 points 11 months ago

Kind of a dark one for today.

[–] camelCaseGuy@lemmy.world 8 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Isn't it ironic, don't you think?

[–] grayman@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Or to the educated, coincidental.

Sadly unironic that the ghost writer (Max Martin, probably) for the song used the word incorrectly.

[–] DharmaCurious@startrek.website 8 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Is the joke that they got there too late..?

[–] BolexForSoup@kbin.social 5 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (2 children)

Yeah, I’m kind of seeing it as three different options. The first is that whatever they were traveling on that crashed had these things, the other’s like you said - it was sent with arrive too late, or #3 they’re dumb and didn’t notice that all the boxes floating around were exactly what they need. Very unclear

[–] sab@kbin.social 8 points 11 months ago

Everything appears to be drifting towards him.

I think the joke is that the guy is unbelievably cartoonishly lucky that all those things are floating too him on a deserted island all at once, put in juxtaposition with the one element of bad luck (that he's already long dead).

[–] Murdoc@sh.itjust.works 2 points 11 months ago

The second one seems most likely as there are indications that the boxes are only just arriving. Also there is an old meme about sending away for items delivered from Acme, like the coyote in Road Runner cartoons.

[–] downpunxx@kbin.social 4 points 11 months ago

like everything it's all in the timing

[–] Murdoc@sh.itjust.works 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Should have opted for Amazon Prime. 😛

[–] Pika@sh.itjust.works 2 points 11 months ago

nowadays that's with prime!

[–] grayman@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Still no gas. Should be a sailboat kit.

[–] aBundleOfFerrets@sh.itjust.works 8 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (2 children)

Box says gas included. Gary thinks of everything

[–] grayman@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)
[–] crimroy@sopuli.xyz 0 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Maybe the gas is in a sealed container and for good measure is located in the top part of the box.

Wait, are we arguing about a 35 year-old unfunny comic? Here we are

[–] grayman@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

To be fair, it was funny to me 35 years ago. I guess I still look at them for nostalgia. I had shirts with prints of the comics! "Pigeon: Poopus Monumentous" was my favorite.

[–] crimroy@sopuli.xyz 1 points 10 months ago

Fair enough!

[–] sagrotan@lemmy.world 0 points 11 months ago

He even thought of going underground as soon as technology developed, kinda like the Unabomber.

When you sign up for free mental healthcare on a non-emergency basis

[–] clearleaf@lemmy.world -1 points 11 months ago

A bit depressing for a comedy comic...
