Eh, the homeowner was in the garage and was also armed with a pistol that he shot at Cavalcante with. To me, it sounded like the homeowner had to do some work in the garage and brought out his guns to protect himself in case Cavalcante happened to be in the area.
If this good guy with a gun was already armed with a pistol, how could he allow the killer to waltz in and take a rifle?
Sounds like Gomer Pyle left his guns unsecured.

Mr armed and dangerous apparently lost a weapon and failed to neutralize the target. The one thing he's probably been having a hard on for years failed.
