How people can choose hate and fear as a form of self-righteousness is the peak of narcissistic self-delusion. There's nothing noble about being a bigot. There's no honor in persecuting innocent people simply for existing. And it's the epitome of cowardice to try to destroy that which you do not understand. These people live in a state of perpetual terror and outrage with regard to the world around them, yet they arrogantly presume to tell everyone else how to live? How dare they.

I couldn't agree more. Your statement is so pointed that I'm going to save it to refer to in the future.

[–] stephfinitely@kbin.social 14 points 1 year ago

It's disgusting how Americans treats its own citizens.

[–] ericthered926@lemm.ee 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I haven’t read the article yet but damn that’s a sobering title. We must do better in the US (and the world). Really frustrating that we keep falling into the same bigoted patterns rather than treating everybody as inherently worthy of bodily autonomy and respect. Batshit that people are making this out to be a states rights issue.

Batshit that people are making this out to be a states rights issue.

like slavery? and this surprises you?

[–] ericthered926@lemm.ee 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

No, that’s why I said we’re falling into the same bigoted patterns as before. It’s not surprising but it is absolutely batshit that we keep rinsing and repeating the same cycle :/

[–] BrooklynMan@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

sorry, my smarmy indignation wasn't aimed at you

[–] ericthered926@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

All good! Totally valid and justified

[–] keeb420@kbin.social 9 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Even in safe states there's plenty of assholes. It's sad really. These conservative Christians really need to judge not, turn the other cheek, and love the sinner.

[–] kaos95@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I'm in one of those "safe" states right now, doesn't mean the amount of bullying and straight up assault has gone down, in fact, in the small rural town I live in it's probably more dangerous to be trans than it would to be so in Miami or Houston.

CNY has felt pretty hostile since the 2016 election. We have so many trump flags, "dont tread on me" flags, and confederate flags that if you saw a picture you'd assume you were in florida. Don't even get me started on bumper stickers.

[–] Spacebar@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

In Rhode Island, my very blue state, two guys in their 30's just got banned from the local Target for trying to dismane a Pride display in the store.

They kept yelling about "children come in here" as they were being escorted out.

The extremists have gotten very bold since Trump was elected.

[–] VoxAdActa@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

If they gave a fuck about kids, they'd be clamoring to outlaw shit like child beauty pageants and child marriages. They don't care about old white men grooming little girls.

I'm in a similar situation with my nonbinary kid and it terrifies me more every day.

[–] BrooklynMan@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago

stay strong. your kid will see your strength and be inspired by it.

[–] CynAq@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Look at how many downvotes this thread received. It's mind boggling how large a portion of us, even in these seemingly progressive environments like kbin, are transphobic.

[–] Briguy24@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

Hate is easy for people already damaged. It takes courage to work on yourself. I can't tolerate how any person want to degrade a less powerful community. Just a bunch of pathetic bullies.

I think it's more that the article is a bit hyperbolic. I live in one of those 32 states that have laws on the books against trans people (and yes, I contacted my state reps to support trans rights), yet we still have a thriving trans community. Our states laws mostly restrict access to certain types of gender-affirming care to adolescents, but no such restrictions exist for adults. There are plenty of trans people and events here, and an overwhelming support for Pride Day and Pride Month activities in urban centers, so LGBT folks have a lot of community support.

I personally didn't downvote, but I considered it just because the article was a bit ridiculous. If you look at the US just 10-20 years earlier, it was way worse for LGBT people, so we're moving in the right direction, it's just two steps forward, one step back. And even if your state has laws on the books that limits access to certain types of care, that doesn't mean that trans people cannot live there, it just means the community needs to step it up so they feel comfortable.

No one spends more time thinking about other people's genitals than Christians do.

[–] _haha_oh_wow_@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago

Yes, but what about all those poor politicians who need to pander to their deeply misinformed base? Won't someone think of the politicians!?

[–] Spacebar@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

As often happens when trans people are discussed, it appears that there are people who (willfully) mischaracterize gender affirming care for children. The standard care is therapy and social transition wayyyyyy before hormones and surgery. If a child asserts they are trans before puberty, a doctor may prescribe puberty blockers. For the most part, they are reversible. 12 year olds are not having sex reassignment surgery.

This whole anti-trans crusade is just the latest distraction Conservatives are orchestrating.

American Conservatives have made boogymen out of so many groups throughout history. Off the top of my head they have demonized:

American Revolutionists, slavery abolitionists, child labor activists, Anarchists, Women suffragates, Anti Segregationists, Interracial Marriage advocates,
Immigrationists, Members of the Civil rights movement, Environmentalists, Gays, Aids sufferers, Same sex spouses...

Trans people are just next on the list. Why? Because it gets their voters to the polls.

[–] Faendol@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago

Conservatives make up shit to piss off their uneducated voter base and distract them from their corporate bullshittery.

[–] foxtrots@sh.itjust.works -3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

This is a bit blown out of proportion. Most collages in America are overwhelmingly supportive of trans people were it iseven a plus to put on a collage app. During pride month we saw monolitic neoliberal war profiteering & planet destroying corporations like Raythion, P&G, Halliburton, Amazon, J&J, etc.. all have over welming support for trans/pride issues.

At some point when you -got through your ivy league college because you said you were trans on the app -get told by the president that he supports trans rights -come home and can find and a plethora queer media -get a job at Halliburton because they want to hire more trans people then spend your days making weapons help bomb wedding in 3rd world countries.

You have to come to the realization that you are not part of a "resistance" anymore.

Yes there's still some lingering issues in some red states and the more people take this overtly victim mentality the worse the pushback will become. It's gotten to the point now we're there is ever become a large rift between the gay/lesbian community and the trans community because of narratives like this.

[–] sweeny@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

You've been sniffing too much glue from those "collages" of yours if you think trans people aren't still widely discriminated. It is literally illegal to transition in some states

[–] zombuey@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I don't think it is. For example Vanderbilt is overwhelming "supportive" on campus but they were also forced to hand over medical records of transgendered patients for an "investigation" into insurance fraud by the state. Transgendered people do not have the same rights and others and people who actively hate them for no reason at all are doing everything they can to make their lives miserable. Republicans love this because it energizes their base and drives progressive voters out of their districts.

[–] foxtrots@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Colleges are hands down the most inclusive and overtly supportive places of the trans people. yes there is pushback by red states but that is far from the norm. "people who actively hate them for no reason at all" hate is an easy pejorative and untrue statement to disregard peoples opinion. Most disagreeing people see trans people much like how most people see furies. They don't agree with it personally but they respect there right to do what they want. they think its not entirely right that some one should come dressed in a full furry outfit to work. They dont think its right that there kids kinder garden teacher should be explaining the life of furies and yifing to my kids and that they need to decide if they are actually human or not. I dont mind my kids learning about that stuff when there in there teens and hell i wouldn't even mind if they grew up to be a furry if its what made them happy. we just wouldnt want it overly presented to them as a kid.

[–] zombuey@lemmy.world -1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hi in my opinion you can go fuck yourself and you shouldn't even exist if this is the way you are.

[–] foxtrots@sh.itjust.works -1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Telling people to "go fuck themselves" as a negative is very hurtful to the asexual community and other people who express self love.

Your obviously just a right wing nazi trying to troll so just go back to 4 chan if your gonna spend hate and tell people to stop "existing". Ovously a nazi dog whistle for violence you bigot.

[–] zombuey@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

lol ya it hurts doesn't it? now imagine rather than your bigoted opinion making you that way you were instead born that way. You see YOU can change your opinion but these people cannot. They deal with that type of unhinged hate on a daily basis just for being who they are. You don't want your kids to see a person in drag, Why? How is that going to affect them? They may realize people who are different are not necessarily dangerous and they won't adopt the same horrible attitude as you? Drag book readings are meant to normalize a group of people who are the most severely persecuted for being who they are in public. They are statistically zero danger to your children. On the other hand 1/4 girls who attend church are molested. It's such a common problem they sell insurance to religious institutions for it. You calling me a bigot is an absolute joke and shows you weren't even intelligent enough to see the obvious point I was trying to make. Furries are nothing like trans people what a fucking joke.

[–] foxtrots@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Ok you dropped a lot there. Let's dissect this

  • about my kids seeing people in drag. I'm gonna refer you back to my furry comment.

  • trans people dont touch kids. It's easy to put those words in my mouth but I never claimed or implied that. My issue lies more with a new culture in western society that overtly promotes trans ideology when much of society doesn't believe this. There's issues not just with conservatives but with feminist who don't like men winning woman of the Year and being the face of woman hood. A biological male shouldn't be the face for real women that are going though a huge fight in this country currently over there rights with there bodys. As well in left leaning ideology there is a concept of intersectionality that tells us it's ok if other cultures & countys don't identify with western ideas of LGBTQ beliefs because the west shouldn't practice imperial practices of enforcing our ways on others. However, this concept that culture is maliuble and not set in stone would apply to those in this county as well.

  • churches and molestation. 2 wrongs don't make a right. People duality of blaming others for sexual misconduct without first cleaning up there own back yard is ironic at best. I'll deffiemtly agree with you on this point.

  • i threw out a satirical response of you being a right wing bigot because you told me to go fuck my self. You your are not going to be respectful nether will I. Seething over your presumed ideas of me is the definition of ignorance. You are angry about people preciving trans people in a wrongful light with villainous stereotypes but if you do that to others then you embodying the very ideas you hate.

  • furries So someone cannot identify as a dog? Why? Someone can take estergon and get surgery to fit there precived sex why can that be done for a species? Dressing in a dog costume and dressing in drag different why? Because societies definition of what "proper clothing" should look like. How many kids spend there days pretending to be a cat, dinosaur, dog, etc... And are told no there a human. If we did that with someone about there gender they would be reprimanded for this but when it comes to identity of species or even more controversially, race? How does that differ from a different identity in gender? Call furries identities a "fucking joke" then tell me why because it sound quite hypocritical.
