Summary

Canada will file a WTO complaint and seek redress under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (CUSMA) against Trump’s new tariffs, calling them a violation of trade commitments.

Trump imposed 25% tariffs on most Canadian imports, with a 10% levy on energy.

In response, Canada announced $30 billion in counter-tariffs on 1,256 U.S. goods, with a potential second round reaching $155 billion.

Officials hope the U.S. reconsiders, but further measures remain an option.

While they battle it out, we all pay the higher prices. For no reason whatsoever.

It's a ploy to distract everyone while he robs the country blind and implements the dictatorship.

Hitler took 53 days. Trump's on track to break that record, because criminally corrupt authoritarians didn't hold a majority in the Weimar Republic.

Hitler took 53 days.

I had never heard of this specific amount of time in reference to Hitler. Here's an Atlantic article that goes in depth, but "Hitler 53 days" gave plenty of search results.

Edit: To call the article haunting is an understatement.

Odds Trump will threaten to leave the WTO if they don't agree with him?

[–] IrateAnteater@sh.itjust.works 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Pretty low I'd say. They'll just ignore the ruling like they always do.

Higher than usual, though, because Trump's ego cannot stand being told "no" even when it's a totally toothless rejection.

Yeah he's like the bratty sensitive kid that will take his ball and go home if he doesn't get his way.

Imagine believing that a genocidal empire cares about trade laws... I mean... Sure they care about trade laws much more than genocide... But still.

[–] BetaBlake@lemmy.world -3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Which genocidal empire are you referencing here?

[–] yeahiknow3@lemmings.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The US with Christian Nationalists at the helm.

[–] Pilferjinx@lemmy.world -3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Who is the US genociding now? If you mean Israel you have to include the whole collective west as enablers.

[–] Randomgal@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Do they pay you or are you just thick?

[–] Pilferjinx@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I guess I'm thick?? Who is the US genociding right now? Immigrants?

[–] yeahiknow3@lemmings.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Currently, Palestinians.

The US is also hellbent on exterminating dolphins and every other living creature until we can achieve a Mad Max apocalypse.

[–] Pilferjinx@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm so sick of this Zionist shit. Blaming the US for Israels genocide is grotesque. It's their genocide and they can fucking stop at any time.

[–] yeahiknow3@lemmings.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Well, yes, but Americans support Zionism, and genocide is something the current president has explicitly endorsed.

Religion is a monstrous evil.

[–] Pilferjinx@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago

There are many nations that support Israels genocide. It makes them all complicit even in abstention. Israel still has all the power to stop at any time.
