Aha.... That's honestly kinda scummy. Is that what people actually call it? (The shorter version in game? I have only heard it refered to as what you said.

It was the βstarts of swimming strokes. So buttter is the start of butterfly stroke, freestyle stroke, etc.

No, the connection today was "starts of swimming strokes".
So they had breast[stroke], butter[fly], free[style], and back[stroke].
Although interestingly, all of these except butterfly are often shortened to the word as it appeared in the puzzle. Butterfly gets shortened to "fly".
