Why are they taking at face value Trump’s assertion that it is for migrants? It seems obvious to me that it is for political opponents, in the long run.

This is why they want to label antifa a "Terrorist Organization" despite the fact that anyone not rooting for the Fascist boot on their face would qualify as a 'member'.
Besides, sequestered migrants will make better slaves stateside when all of our yearly produce starts to rot on the vine...
Especially given the "held indefinitely without trial" part

Yeah. He really likes the factor that it is physically separated from anything that might gain entry without going to war with the US military first, and that it has an institutional history of torture, indefinite detention, and no trials.
