Summary

An NBC News investigation found less than 4% of reported sex crimes in several U.S. cities lead to convictions.

The investigation revealed low arrest rates, frequent plea deals, and systemic racial disparities, particularly in Chicago, where Black victims see the lowest conviction rates.

Experts cite factors like resource constraints, victim credibility concerns, and the emotional toll on survivors.

Variances in how agencies handle cases hinder transparency and accountability.

Advocates argue that despite heightened awareness, the justice system still fails most victims of sexual violence.

4% of reported crimes. That’s even worse

Yup. Crimes that don't get reported and crimes that don't get prosecuted.

Considering the number of abandoned rape kits, there's no way it's as high as 4% of all cases.
