Since Pavel Durov; the CEO of Telegram got arrested, I just instinctly have avoided telegram all together. I actually stopped two years before he got arrested as I just simply felt uneasy with the app. No encryption by default. Using obfuscation rather than encryption. But that's just my opinion. Jumped over to signal and feeling much happier

MODERATORS
The official Telegram client has integrations with some proprietary stuff like Google Maps and probably Google Translate? Another client can help with that. It won't help with privacy of Telegram itself though.
Don't why you want to use Telegram but in any cases this is not a good idea, even with Forks. It maybe remove blobs but don't change the Telegram infrastructure
Telegram client is the only thing from them that's open, so I would stick to that as it's where most eyes are looking.
