In the UK there's a card game "top trumps":

Also in various card games (with a standard 52 card deck), like bridge, beating one hand with a better hand would be said to have one hand 'trump' another.

I hate that there's a shady guy out there that has that word so tied to him.

I’ve heard that in the UK “Trump” is old person slang for a fart and has been since before the American Trump family was well known.

It is indeed but it's also used in a lot of card games to describe one hand that trumps (beats) another...

Have you played many card games? Trump cards are ones that beat any other card in a hand.

I'm aware of trump cards in card games. I'd just never heard "comes up trumps" as a turn of phrase. Made no sense to me in the context of a tv show.
