& I’m doing pretty good! The wefwef app has done a great job of recreating the Apollo experience and has made it a lot easier to not want to go and download the Reddit app. The more active it gets here, the easier it’ll be. How are you guys doing so far? Have you found an App for Lemmy that you prefer the most yet?

I'm a bit confused but I'm getting there. I've figured out I can sign into lemmy.world but otherwise I keep getting account errors. World seems decent enough though

I figure eventually the most stable one will become default for most, world is the only one I have managed to actually create an account on, so I guess I'm here. More so become RIF sent me

This is exactly what we should avoid; lemmy.world is already having some federation and stability issues because it's ballooning so much.

People should stop recommending the already massive servers and recommend smaller general ones like lemm.ee, lemmy.one, and vlemmy.net instead; it's all connected anyway. Those instances have also been upgraded to accommodate this surge of users and have already been around for years without issue.

The entire point of decentralization, as I understand it, is to spread out, not rely on a single entity, and still be connected. Would be a shame if we didn't take advantage of that.

You only really need one account on one instance. Except in cases of defederation you can read, comment, post and join communities on other instances from the same account.

Basically the choice is yours to find an instance with the rules you're comfortable with and make an account there. Every instance admin can moderate the way they want -- which of course could lead to some consequences, for example: lemmy.world defederated from 'exploding heads' because it was a right-wing racist cesspool. But even then, anyone who enjoys that can just move there. :p

Edit: If you go to Communities (at the top) and use the 'All' tab, you can find communities across all instances and subscribe to them easily. :)

Edit2: Been trying to explain it to friends, haha. But I suck at explaining things. :D So.. Every instance is basically the equivalent of reddit, except in this case there are numerous reddits with their own admins and rulles, and they're all linked (unless defederated). Every instance has numerous communities (subreddit equivalents). You only need an account on one instance to enjoy them all (again: unless defederated but in that case you could, if you really wanted to, just make an account there as well).

When i search on communities, it seems they are very fragmented. I can find 4-5 communities on the same topic on 5 different instances, with different subscriber counts. Is there some way to merge them in the client? Or can the mods decide to join forces?

This is true. I imagine that after a while 'dominant' communities will surface, just like they did on reddit, where it was quite fragmented in the beginning. But until then, I believe some devs were working on something like multireddit and I imagine (some) apps will do this too. There is at least one Firefox extension that does multilemmy, called Mullem.

You can "sub" to "subreddits" from other instances. I.e. on "programming.dev", there is "programmer humor", so I can browse and comment on it via https://lemmy.world/c/programmer_humor@programming.dev

The handle (i.e. programmer_humor@programming.dev) is always found in the sidebar.

(Quotes as I don't know the proper lingo yet... is it "communities" for subreddits?)
