I had some exciting stuff arrive this morning and over the weekend!

First up, a nice Stirling haul:
Stirling Haul

This is the 31mm Zenith boar brush, the same that was used for the subreddit's prior "Moar Boar" group buy. The handle feels great in hand, and the knot seems just as nice as my other Zenith boar. My only complaint is that the Zenith and Stirling logos are pretty far off-level with the base of the handle. Not the end of the world, but it's unfortunate.

Christmas Eve in a bath soap is a great scent. I'm looking forward to trying it and Frankincense & Myrrh in shave soap format.

Deep Blue Sea aftershave is a re-stock. I love it with a bit of menthol.

The bonus was a sample of Haverford bath soap. I've previously used the shave soap/splash/frag, so this sample is most welcome. It's such a winning scent, especially for this time of year.

Next, some new hardware:
New Razors

From left to right:

  • 1940's GEM Clog-Pruf Single Edge Razor
  • Chiseled Face Titanium Legacy Razor
  • RazoRock Game Changer with .68 and .76 plates and the "Bulldog" handle

The Clog-Pruf seems in quite good condition for its age and price (~$15 shipped). I'm still waiting on some GEM blades and want to clean it up just a bit before trying it out.

The CF TI Legacy razor is a real indulgence, but it's a belated birthday gift from my wife, and we got a good deal from a kind soul on Discord. I've shaved with this razor a few times since I got it this weekend and it's quickly vaulted to the top of my list. If I had to pick a desert island razor right now, this is very likely the one I would pick. Likely, I'm still deep in the honeymoon phase, but this is truly an outstanding razor.

I got a good deal on the Game Changer on the zaar before I ordered the CF Legacy. It's a great shaver, I like how low profile the head is (very easy to shave under the nose), and the stainless steel construction is most definitely a step up from my Rockwell 6C. This will probably take the 6C's place in my collection.

And finally, a Barrister and Mann score:
Paganini's Violin soap and aftershave splash

I've wanted to try this scent since I first read about it, so when I saw the set for a decent deal on the zaar I snatched it up.

Clean, mild, and strangely complex. I'm very much looking forward to getting to know this fragrance.

Now that everybody has digested somewhat their voting trauma, it is time to reopen the wounds. 😱

The voting procedure for the BVWSC consisted up to now in me simply winging it, but last month, I didn't wing it correctly, and dukkha ensued. First, I got trigger happy and announced a winner when some important members (ahem @walden@sub.wetshaving.social ahem) had not yet voted. In order to prevent this from ever happening again, what I would like to propose is that we formalize a bit more the process, in the sense that there should be some fixed amount of time (48 hours?) for each of the soap nomination thread and the voting thread, and that a winner can be announced only after this time.

Second, there is potentially an issue with the voting procedure and count. What I have done so far is to allot a number of points which is inverse to the rank you proposed. That is, assuming three proposed soaps, the soap ranked first gets 3 points, the soap ranked 2nd get 2 points, and the soap ranked 3rd gets 1 point. Then, I simply add up these points, and announce the winner. This is similar to a Borda count (which I didn't know, but you can read up here and more in detail here. Borda counts are unproblematic as long as every voter ranks every soap - which has not been the case in the last vote, and which may have cost Westman Shaving's Noir the victory. @DaveWave94@sub.wetshaving.social suggested that someone who did not rank all soaps should be counted as attributing some points to the soaps he did not vote for. That is, assuming our example with 3 soaps, someone who ranked only one soap (which therefore gets 3 points) should also be counted as attributing in the end some points to the other two soaps. I see Dave's point, and am sympathetic to it, but I don't know exactly what would be the best formula.

The easiest method in that spirit would be that the unranked soaps get to share the points that could have been, but have not been, attributed (which would make 1.5 points for each remaining soap - which could also be rounded down to 1 point?). Alternatively, we could also require that any voter provide a full ranking. Any opinion on these proposals, or idea or other proposals how to better implement something similar, but better?

I don't have any intrinsic preference, other than I would like to have a method that can be easily implemented in a spreadsheet (by me, without much knowledge of spreadsheets).

Thank you in advance for your input, and if you have any other complaints/proposals/questions about the process or BVWSC more in general, please feel free to do so.

Not long ago I won a beautiful brush handle from Peter at Wolf Whiskers in a charity raffle. It came with a great synthetic knot, but it was lofted too short for me. I decided to remove it so I can put something else in.

I emailed Peter and he confirmed that all of his brushes are assembled with epoxy. I didn't want to risk steaming the handle, but the Discord chat convinced me to try a 5 minute steam, which I did... 5 minutes isn't long, and it didn't work.

Not wanting to further risk a total failure (the handle is in 2 pieces, plus it has a coin in the bottom), I went back to plan A - mechanical destruction.

Picture 1: I used a box cutter with a fresh blade to slice most of the hair off

Picture 2: I used a combination of a small cutoff wheel and a grinder bit on a Dremel tool and started slowly chipping away at things.

Picture 3: This bit worked the absolute best. It's small, so it took a while. It also created TONS of dust, so I had to do this outside.

Picture 4: This is pretty much the end result. It was very difficult to know when to stop. The end of the knot/epoxy and beginning of "handle" was never really obvious. In the end, the hole was 15.5mm deep, and 26.5mm wide.

I did mess it up in a few spots. The keyless chuck on the dremel has some knurling which made contact with the ferule a few times, despite me trying to be careful. I was able to buff them a little bit and they're only noticeable if you're looking closely at it.

I still haven't decided which knot to put in it, but it's a beautiful handle!
