Consistency

As you may know, a message written in one Reddit client doesn't display the same in another. Here's an example:

Example

```
First line
Second line
```

reddit.com and the official app both render this correctly:

First line
Second line

old.reddit.com, however, renders everything on one line:

First line Second line

They also differ in how they render subscripts with parentheses (a^(\(b\))), nested subscripts (a^b^c), and code blocks and lists that immediately follow text.

Lemmy doesn't have these issues, since its Markdown specification is clearly defined.

Images

On Reddit, if you want to add images to a text post, you have to use the Fancy Pants editor on reddit.com. If you attempt to edit such a post on the official app, a third-party app, old.reddit.com or the mobile site, these images simply turn into links. Additionally, you can't attach images in comments.

Lemmy lets you attach images from anywhere, including comments.

This troll used an admin name with one more letter. How do we deal with admin identity theft? Should instance admins reserve usernames preemptively? This troll will likely try u/Desssalines or something similar next. Maybe mod/admin flairs should be more flashy to avoid such confusions?

Any idea why I might see 63 up votes change to 11 when I vote, or 4 to 14?

Idk where to post this, so I'm posting here.

I've been adding communities that we're missing, and adding content to populate the site. Sometimes this content applies to multiple communities, so I tried crossposting and it was so easy!

On top of that, reading articles outside of the site then trying to post it here but I'm worried I might be duplicating posts. It's so easy to see that the content was already posted and I can just link to it.

When someone edits that cross post, it also shows up in other places too. I think that's how it works. People cross-posted my posts for the first time and when they added content to the body, it showed up in the other locations too.

You can see which communities cross posted as well, and go to those communities too. It helps in knowing where to cross post in the future.

I'm really loving this feature and it's making populating content so easy. Thank you!

Here is a guide on how to use PowerDeleteSuite to edit all Reddit comments automatically, which can be helpful for people who are migrating from Reddit and want to promote Lemmy:

  1. Download and install PowerDeleteSuite from the official GitHub repository1.
  2. Open PowerDeleteSuite and log in to your Reddit account.
  3. Click on the "Edit" tab in the PowerDeleteSuite interface.
  4. In the "Edit" tab, you can choose to edit all your comments or only comments from specific subreddits.
  5. Enter the text you want to replace your comments with in the "Edit to" field. This is where you can promote Lemmy by sharing information, links, or any other relevant content.
  6. Click on the "Edit" button to start the editing process.
  7. PowerDeleteSuite will automatically edit all your comments with the new text you specified, which can help spread the word about Lemmy to your Reddit community.
  8. Note that PowerDeleteSuite does not wait after editing a comment, so it will make the next request immediately2.
  9. After the editing process is complete, you can choose to delete all your comments using the "Delete" tab in the PowerDeleteSuite interface.

It is important to note that many subreddits have Automoderator configurations that could be triggered when you edit, so ensure that the content you provide in the edits aligns with the rules and guidelines of each subreddit1. Additionally, PowerDeleteSuite edits comments by overwriting the original text in the database with a word or single letter, then deleting it3. Finally, it is worth mentioning that PowerDeleteSuite pulls the latest version from GitHub, so whenever the developer adds new features or fixes bugs, you will have access to them1.

By using PowerDeleteSuite to edit your Reddit comments and promote Lemmy, you can help introduce people to this alternative platform and encourage them to join the community.

I'm just wondering if there's any strategy to link to a post in an instance agnostic kind of way.

Take for example this post which originates in !lemmy@lemmy.ml.

If someone sent me that link but I did not have a lemmy.ml account, then I can read it but not participate.

If I have an account at lemmy.world then it's not trivial to find that post on that instance. I can't just edit the url because the post ID is not the same. I'd have to navigate to lemmy.world/c/lemmy@lemmy.ml and find the post from that feed. This might be possible for recent posts but becomes very difficult with any posts even a little stale.

My understanding of "how lemmy works" is very naive, but I assume it's not possible to generate UUIDs for posts. That being the case you'd need separate lookup servers that maintain lists of urls for posts and can translate between them.

I already have accounts on two instances, but both of them are currently experiencing significant slowdowns. As a result, I'm searching for an alternative instance, preferably one that is not facing any load issues.

I know patron takes a slice of the pie, but I don’t know the details on Liberapay or OpenCollective. Presumably crypto would have the least potential for fees, but I would rather pledge fiat.

Why does searching for lemmy content on mastodon.social, such as a search for [@lemmy](https://lemmy.ml/c/lemmy) or [@liaizon](https://social.wake.st/@liaizon)/110530316373516739, produce zero results? Some of the content is accessible through this instance, e.g. https://mastodon.social/@liaizon@wake.st/110530316373516739, it's just not findable with search, and some of it redirects when accessed in that way.

Has anyone else had the upvote/downvote buttons, along with the post & comment toolbars disappear when using the darkly theme? They're still there, because if you click in the right spot you can get where you want, they just seem to be black on black. You can still see them if you switch to lightly or lightly red.

I'm using the latest version of Edge if that matters.

Edit: Switching the theme setting around seems to have fixed it, actually.

I'm serious. Specially, the community - you folks, no matter the instance, you rock. You're amazing.

In Reddit it's always a struggle to word your posts/comments in a way that it won't trigger

  • unwarranted assumptions popping out of nowhere
  • "I dun unrurrstand" meaning "I disagree but I'm pretending that you aren't following any logic"
  • "You're saying that because..." [insert insane troll logic] everywhere
  • "U think dat 50 is not 100? Than u think 50 is 0! Dats stupid lol" tier oversimplifications all the fucking time.
  • insert random distortion of what you said, either due to malice or stupidity

Here though? People actually disagree with each other on rational = human grounds. They aren't attacking each other, they're agreeing or disagreeing with what is said!

It's specially noteworthy that even Lemmygrad's community specifically tailored for Leftist infighting is more wholesome than non-discussion subreddits. Like, it's a server made for people with strong political opinions, a community made to let them fight, and yet they can reason better than Reddit.

Please keep being awesome.

It would be awesome with more people helping to answer questions in !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml, this is one of the first places people head with their issues. You can always just subscribe and consider helping next time you see a post from there.

I feel extremely stupid for noticing this just now.

I run a furry instance which has sfw content but also nsfw, and I'm worried about having the whole instance blocked due to other instances being iffy about furry stuff.

When you visit a remote community from your instance, and if you're an admin, you can click on "remove". Not only will the community stay removed even if users search for it again, but it's also reversible in case you change your mind. (Don't use purge because it'll forget you wanted the community removed and it'll be searchable again).

I wish there was an option to silence a community so that users who really wanted to see something can still search and subscribe, but without it appearing in public lists or timelines, but this is the next best thing.

The huge benefit here is that you don't block the instance's users to participate in your communities nor do you prevent your users to participate in communities that you see appropriate for your instance. Overall it preserves federation which is the main point and strength of federated platforms.

So if you come across furry stuff you don't like for your instance, just remove the community. Thank you <3

I hope I see more and more subreddits go dark indefinitely!

792

So I got this instance up yesterday and I didn't (still don't) really understand federation.

Does any one have a tutorial or an explainer I could tuck into that can help me figure out how to effectively federate/ connect to other lemmy instances?

For example, I connected to !memes!memes@lemmy.ml. It appears to now be 'federated', in that when I look at 'all communities' on !wsb_memes@wallstreets.bet , then I see posts. Whats weird though, is that they are all 18 hours behind, and have no activity.

I really want to support the growth of the lemmy verse. I think the best way to do this is with unique, niche focused federated instances for 'groups' of specific interests. wallstreets.bet is how I thought I could support that. But I'm struggling with the federation aspect and I'm not sure its working correctly.

793

I created the Powerlifting community on lemmy.ml but I'm not seeing any of the mod actions listed here when I click the ellipses under a post:

https://join-lemmy.org/docs/en/users/04-moderation.html

Does this instance have those disabled?

Crosslinking (lemmy.ml)

I have an account on lemmy.ml, as you can all see.

My partner has an account on lemmy.world

When I link a post, let's say this one I picked at random, it is a link to a specific post ID on lemmy.ml

If I send this to my partner, as I do with a lot of things we both enjoy, they will be able to read it, but not reply/respond, as they don't have a lemmy.ml account. The post ID for the same post is different via lemmy.world, obviously.

This post even originated on lemmy.world, sort of, as it's poster is from there.

We send each other links like this all the time, and on reddit or hacker news, that's not a problem. There can be only one HN, after all. Lemmy is not so monolithic, and it looks like this is a serious downside.

I can't reply to other instances than my "home instance", and I can't easily discover what the post ID for this post is on my home instance, so my interaction/"engagement" is probably going to be very low for things I didn't discover myself.

Am I missing some functionality here?

[Edit: I no English berry good.]

795

I've had a look at signups for multiple lemmy instances and they all seem relatively painless to sign up for - perhaps a bit too painless. While some require approval by a human, I'm not seeing much in the line of email veritifcation (heck, it's optional) or captchas. Is there any particular reason behind this? Or is this up to admins to enforce? While I do appreciate this has privacy benefits, I am concerned it makes lemmy as a whole prone to botting, and with that the ability for bad actors to influence user opinions at whim. Would be interested to hear the dev's thoughts on this.

Since we dont rely on ads we rely on sharing the plataform in other social media and when someone suggests Lemmy they always comment that they do not like the controversy there. Ban politics and Lemmy will grow faster

Everyone, there has been a lot of miss information about what is a tankie and the ability for the lemmy community to criticize the Chinese government.

I present to you a simple test to see if the person you are talking to is trust worthy.

Ask anyone to say the following

I lemmy user Denounce the terrible treatment Xi Jing Ping has inflicted upon the Uighur Muslims. Slavery and concentration camps in China are wrong and not ok.

The admins of lemmy.ml and lemmygrad.ml will not say this. Actually they cannot say this because they are probably employed by the Chinese Government and would be put to death if they did.

Thats all and happy posting!

If you have changes that you'd like to see, it's worth at least opening the pull request! It makes this a better place for everyone

I've been so used to judging a post just by its popularity on reddit, but it's actually so much more useful to have an idea of the downvote ratio. I'm glad we have that here.

It was a scandal when it disappeared from YouTube, but I didn't realize it was missing from Reddit too for much longer!

I'd love to contribute some improvements to the lemmy-js-client documentation (ex. https://join-lemmy.org/api/interfaces/GetPosts.html), but I can't seem to find the source of that.

I've tried to search in the main Lemmy repo for the comment under community_name to try to give me a pointer, and I can't find any results.

Any ideas where this documentation is even coming from?
