Hello fellow Far Side fans!

About this community and how I post the comic strip… Many moons ago, I would ask my Dad to save the newspaper for me everyday so I could read my favorite comic strips and one of those was The Far Side. These days of course you find just about anything online including www.thefarside.com where they post several comics a day and I repost them here. Just to note, the date you see in my posts is not the initial release date, but the date they were posted on the website.

The Far Side is a single-panel comic created by Gary Larson and syndicated by Chronicle Features and then Universal Press Syndicate, which ran from December 31, 1979, to January 1, 1995 (when Larson retired as a cartoonist). Its surrealistic humor is often based on uncomfortable social situations, improbable events, an anthropomorphic view of the world, logical fallacies, impending bizarre disasters, (often twisted) references to proverbs, or the search for meaning in life… Read more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Far_Side

Hope you enjoy and feel free to contribute to the community with art, cool stuff about the author, tattoos, toys and anything else, as long it’s The Far Side!

Holy shit the dad's thought bubble made me think this was an edit

[–] Donkter@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

That bubble made me laugh out loud. Gary Larson was unhinged.

I find it so weird that these posts are titled with today's date rather than like, the date of the original comic lol

[–] psud@aussie.zone 8 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, the date is from the website, but there's no good reason to date them like so

[–] intensely_human@lemm.ee 4 points 5 months ago

She can date anyone she wants!

[–] shasta@lemm.ee 16 points 5 months ago (2 children)

I really don't understand these

[–] ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works 28 points 5 months ago

Red Cloud: famous Sioux tribal leader.

Sioux: tribe that hunted bison.

Gary Larsen seemed to take a recurring interest in the events surrounding or semi-related to what's called Custer's Last Stand.

I'm not sure there's anything to understand; it's a pretty surrealist strip.

Is this where Buffalo Bill came from?

[–] xkbx@startrek.website 21 points 5 months ago

No, this is where we get the lesser-known “Bison Bob” - semi-famous from wild west stories such as “The Good, The Bad, and the Okay-looking,” and “Fistful of Sand Dollars”

[–] psud@aussie.zone 3 points 5 months ago

It is set a little before Buffalo Bill and the attempt to eradicate the native Americans by eliminating their food supply: Buffalo. They nearly succeeded in driving the animal extinct. They had little luck eradicating the people

Was this comic from today? I didn't know they still published Far Side. Glad they are still being published!

[–] wasabi@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Copyright logo on the top right says '92.

[–] Burn_The_Right@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Why in the world would the title say June 4th 2024? Is the OP trying to pass these off as current?

[–] booly@sh.itjust.works 8 points 5 months ago (1 children)

OP is just republishing the comics of the day published on the official Far Side website.

If Gary Larson were no longer with us, he'd be spinning in his grave.

[–] 0x0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 5 months ago

Instead, he's spinning in his office chair

[–] BluesF@lemmy.world 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Take a look through all the old posts. They all just have the day's date on them.

[–] Burn_The_Right@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago (2 children)

That's insane. Why would someone post old comics with modern dates? Why not just post the original date, unless they were trying to be deceptive? We already know what today's date is. Truly bizarre.

[–] BluesF@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

I think they're posted on the website with today's date as the title.

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 4 points 5 months ago

I've complained about the same thing, this is just the title of the page on the website that gets filled into Lemmy when posting.

[–] johannesvanderwhales@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago

Gary Larson is retired but there are reruns.

[–] Seleni@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

As others have said, these are taken from Gary Larson’s daily website posts of old comics.

He is still drawing. Although retired, he recently got a tablet and has been experimenting with it, so he puts out new comics on his website every so often when the mood strikes him.

Makes me think of rockos modern life, where heifer (a cow) was literally raised by wolves

I imagine his ultimate nightmare was closer to having his people's land stolen and his tribe whiped of the face of the earth, with little more than a reference regarding their murderers as the sum total of their history.
