There's a massive inertia from reddit being the go-to social network for enthusiasts, it will need years if you want it to be fully replaced by something else. I will keep lemmy, but i believe going back to reddit is a smart choice... for now.

It's not a binary decision, they're not mutually exclusive.
It's like arguing about browsers. I use Firefox and I use Chrome every day.
I've been using mastodon & reddit everyday, but while I've had a lemmy account for a long while but until now the community hasn't been well aligned with my interest.
If just a third of the current active users stick around I can see it becoming part of my daily scrolling.
Being a member of the Fediverse is an investment in the future I feel. There's not tons right now like on Reddit, but you can stick around and help build it by posting, commenting and voting. Alternatively, you can come back in a few years when this is the way that new communities form.
Reddit's behaviour is a statement of intent for the future, to make money at all costs, sell up and become another advertiser friendly walled garden like Instagram. That's fine for them, but I have no interest in being part of that.
Thats a very fair take.
I will be staying for sure. There's nothing worth saving over on reddit anyway. I've hoped for a long time the fediverse would get good enough to challenge the mainstream platforms. and with this sudden influx of people (and hence developers), it just might.
what's reddit?
I'm staying, but I'll use both. I use Baconreader, there's no other way I'll interact with reddit. But I'll go back as a lurker. Already overwote my comments and deleted my account. I don't trust them to not pull this shit in the future even if they did change their minds this time.
I'm really enjoying Lemmy though, been a great place to interact, especially with jerboa! A lot of similarities to baconreader, enough that the only "shock" was the less users so discussion is a little slower. But it's still a really great place in my opinion and I'll continue using it for the future.
12 years, and my days of contributing to Reddit are over. It's obvious they're more interested in money than the communities. It's best to walk away and move on.
I'll participate on here for now, and we'll see how it goes.
Yes, I'll be staying. The writing is on the wall. I don't expect old.reddit
to be around too much longer; I wouldn't be too surprised if RES is gone within the next few years, too.
Spez also talked about a $1 monthly charge, is clearly not trustworthy, wants to add Facebook style ads and looks like a stand in from the country club from ground hog day.... I think I'll pop in for my niche sub reddits but I'm going to make a conscious effort to not feed the monster baby going forward.
Definitely. Fuck Reddit forever. Killing third party apps was the last straw.
Reddit has been a dumpster fire for years now, I grab every straw that has even remote chance of becoming successful
they won't. besides, i'm pretty invested here, now!
Possibly. That said, I'm going to actively use Lemmy and try to get used to it and find new communities.
Reddit could only succeed because of their user base...which they are actively giving the finger to...
The thing is, even if Reddit 100% steps down from their proposed changes and fires spez, they've already burned the 3rd party app developers to the extent that they simply won't want to continue development. I can't imagine the Apollo or RiF devs want anything to do with Reddit after the way they've been treated.
So one way or another, 3rd party apps for Reddit are probably dead. For that reason, I'm seriously unlikely to ever use Reddit the way I used to. I will probably still check it in browser using old.reddit from time to time, at least until they kill that too. But my typical use will never be the same.
I know I will. Reddit has become complete dog water over the past few years and I've been looking for a decent alternative for a while now.
Literally the only thing Reddit has going for it is troves of NSFW content and some incredibly niche communities that Lemmy doesn't yet have answers for.
sure, it's nice to develop alternatives
I think I will. Exploring the Fediverse has made me realise how massively oversaturated Reddit has become. It's amazing that you can find a community about any subject you can imagine there, but there's also hella memes and silly content. The smaller userbase here encourages people to actively engage with a bit more critical thought, so I'm finding the quality of discussion to be a lot deeper and more satisfying. If Reddit feels like a frat bar, this feels like the nicer pub down the road with older people.
Even if Reddit backtrack, they've shown how little they care about the community that is responsible for its very success. I don't want to use a platform that sees me purely as ad revenue. I'm excited to see how things develop and how these alternative communities turn out. It feels like I'm watching the development of some type of genuinely new social media platform movement for the first time in a long, long time. Maybe since Google Plus. But hopefully this time it'll stick around!
