For owls that are superb.

If you find an injured owl:

Note your exact location so the owl can be released back where it came from. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist to get correct advice and immediate assistance.

Minimize stress for the owl. If you can catch it, toss a towel or sweater over it and get it in a cardboard box or pet carrier. It should have room to be comfortable but not so much it can panic and injure itself. If you can’t catch it, keep people and animals away until help can come.

Do not give food or water! If you feed them the wrong thing or give them water improperly, you can accidentally kill them. It can also cause problems if they require anesthesia once help arrives, complicating procedures and costing valuable time.

If it is a baby owl, and it looks safe and uninjured, leave it be. Time on the ground is part of their growing up. They can fly to some extent and climb trees. If animals or people are nearby, put it up on a branch so it’s safe. If it’s injured, follow the above advice.

It's 6 pm here, but since you all are from all over, this is probably close enough to the middle.

Most of us have probably only been here about 6 months, but I've enjoyed all my superb time with you all this year. I look forward to the upcoming year with all of you, and everyone new we pick up along the way!

I hope I keep finding great owl photos and news stories for you to look forward to, and that they bring you a smile every day!

Happy New Year to you and everyone in the community!

Honestly, I had NO idea there were so many different kinds of owls before I started seeing your information posts. It's been a joy reading them. Thank you and can't wait to see what shenanigans we get up to this year.

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Same here. I expected maybe 80 or 100 owls, not 250ish!

It's also impressive that they've remained so mysterious to us, even though humans have been fascinated with them for tens of thousands of years. There are so many owls we still don't know for sure where they live or what they eat, etc .

But as soon as we do find out, I'll tell you! 😉

💚 happy New Year all! It's been fun, hopefully even more Owl goodness next year

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Lots more owls we haven't even covered yet, so no worries!

Thank you for hanging around so long, you're one of the early regulars, so I'm glad to always see you pop in.

Seeing a number of you hang around has always kept me just as motivated as seeing the new people. I know I'm doing something right if you guys keep coming back! ☺️

Thanks for keeping this going, I thank you for all the aloof, mysterious owl pictures that brightened a difficult year. And the owl competition.

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Well, I hope this year will be better for you, and I'm here to do what I can to help with that! I am already excited for and dreading the next Owl of the Year! 😅

[–] craftyindividual@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

Thanks, there's a lot of effort gone into this community from where it started.
