Obviously it's because China and North Korea, being totalitarian dictatorships, have made suicide illegal and punishable by death!

(I have literally met someone who thought that suicide is punishable by death in China. Like if you try to kill yourself and survive they'll finish the job for you.)

I always find it fascinating how readily people in the west will believe the most patently absurd things about countries they've been told to hate.

[–] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

And it's of course projection as always, for example, suicide was illegal in UK till 1961, and most other western countries also criminalised it at some points in the past.

Pretty much all the crazy accusations the west levels against the adversaries have either happened or are currently happening in the west.

I think it's because they're raised from birth having only heard these absurd notions and many never consider if they are truly absurd or not. It's kinda sad.

And yet... Here you are trusting the numbers coming out of NK 🤷

[–] 666@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Another drooling hit from Sh.itjust.works!

"NUH UH I CAN'T TRUST CPC OR NK NUMBERS" why? They're totalitarian and authoritarian? So is America. They lie about numbers? America doesnt? Every single criticism you land here could be applied to the shithole capitalist country you live in twice or four-fold. So, what is the actual reason you don't believe them?

Because they're just North Korean? What? You believe the shit that is said about the country?

[–] peterg@mstdn.plus -5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

@666 @Sprocketfree no, it's because, unlike NK or China, in US these numbers come from variety of sources which makes them verifiable. In contrast China an NK numbers come from the government only and no actual verification is possible.

UNDESA and organizations are still allowed in and typically collect information on other things such as mortality rates and causes of death. NK has 10k tourists a year and many more likely undeclared..do you think not a single other organization other than the NK government does at least some research when there is other organizations from global institutes doing similar research as well?

N.K is also in WHO. https://data.who.int/countries/408 Even just here they mention other organizations that have collected info from North Korea...

Why do you think it works like that for China and North Korea? Do you think Xi or Kim look over every report that a organization creates after they summon them to central government? Why?

Do we have actual proof that North Korea actually fudges those numbers then?

thank you for providing us all with an example of a western racist with low intellect

[–] rainpizza@lemmygrad.ml 11 points 3 days ago

Why will NK need to lie about their numbers?

[–] culprit@lemmy.ml 13 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Those downvoters would be very radicalized if they could absorb information critical of capitalism.

A quick search on google proved really quickly that these numbers are incorrect.

Feel free to look it up yourself.

Edit: op edited the image.

Reason: Mis or disinformation. These numbers are not correct.

Seeing how you found such evidence, feel free to provide it, or it didn’t happen.

From Wikipedia:

In many countries, suicide rates are underreported due to social stigma, cultural or legal concerns.[3] Thus, these figures cannot be used to compare real suicide rates, which are unknown in most countries.

China Asia 6.7

North Korea Asia 8.2

South Korea Asia 21.2

And it didn't list numbers for Taiwan

[–] yogthos@lemmy.ml 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You know what you're completely right. Fixed the numbers and added sources in the description.

WHAAAAT? Someone from sh.itjust.works is not a turbolib?

[–] Comtief@lemm.ee 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's not that straightforward. The reality of which society people prefer is clear - North Korean defectors risk their lives to reach South Korea, while the reverse simply doesn't happen. As for suicide statistics, there are several issues here. First, North Korean statistics are notoriously unreliable. Second, South Korea's higher reported rates stem from complex factors: intense social pressure, rapid modernization, elderly poverty, and cultural attitudes toward mental health. In less developed countries, suicides often go unreported due to stigma, poor record-keeping, or classification as accidents. Plus, access to mental healthcare and willingness to discuss mental health openly - which are good things - can actually lead to higher reported rates. So comparing raw suicide statistics between such different societies doesn't really tell us much about quality of life or which society is superior.

[–] yogthos@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Your premise if false. Defectors run off because they don't know what the conditions are like and have bought into propaganda. Many who leave end up regretting it once they realize what they got themselves into. An example here https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cqjre1zpz5ko

Incidentally, this was the case with the dissolution of USSR as well where many people expected their lives to improve with introduction of capitalism. They were quickly disabused of these delusions once they got to experience the system first hand.

Nice cherry pick, thousands have defected but one wanted to go back and suddenly they're being misinformed. I'm from a ex-soviet union country myself and I'm talking from experience that you are full of crap. All this other stuff also seems cherry-picked. Anyway I see I'm wasting my breath on a tankie. Seems like this community here is a bit bonkers.
