Isn't Signal still centralised? Why use it over Matrix? (genuine question)
It's more private and secure, and it's easier to use/recommend.
Matrix stores all metadata, and most all of it makes it's way to the matrix.org (default instance) server and is subject to dragnet subpoenas. It's also complicated to use, incredibly slow, and resource-intensive.

I hope Signal doesnt end up getting outlawed in the US. Elon musk seems to be against it now, and he has a lot of power these days.

He only cares about free speech when he can control what and whom it is flooded to. If you disagree with him, it will get automatically prioritized for the trash heap and chances are his critics will have worked it out of their system to bother complaining somewhere else, giving him a two for one.
