In bad country the government censors social media.

some perverse part of me hopes that the refugess keep jumping from on chinese platform onto another to force them to block each and prove that there is indeed a great american firewall.

Edit: on second thought, it probably wouldn't matter. one of the take aways from my interaction with the liberals about the yougov poll and their insistence at ignoring the genocide is that they double down just as hard as any republican does when confronted with reality; so doing this would have zero benefit and only serve to cut off westerners from something other than western propaganda.

You can really tell who controls CNNs leash from this story.

And frankly, the law Biden signed to ban TikTok could apply to a lot of foreign social media apps and they're not preemptively banning any of those. Just the one Americans are using right now.

National security threat indeed. Actions speak.

Rednote being wholly located in China is arguably a feature because it's outside of the jurisdiction of this law. The government can demand divestment but the only way we could be "protected" is if they go mask off and reveal the actual goal, a great American firewall.

I know the law allows the president to add more sites sithout further legislation; could they force the major app stores to remove XHS?

I think that’s the only play they have without revealing their hand.

But that’ll just lead to pissed off Americans figuring out en masse how to sideload apps which is even more problematic if your goal is controlling content.

Please TikTokkers: could you please flock to Facebook to get Facebook banned?

Facebook is one of the state-approved social media sites. Zuck bends the knee to Trump.

This wouldn't be an issue if they passed a digital bill of rights that applied to all social media.
