What does it do with them?

Besides be all like

[–] gofsckyourself@lemmy.world 32 points 3 months ago (3 children)

I wonder why this one's antennae are curled. Most pictures show them straight.

[–] Classy@sh.itjust.works 18 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Here's one I photographed a year ago

[–] casmael@lemm.ee 16 points 3 months ago (1 children)

What a lovely fellow he’s waving at you :3

[–] Classy@sh.itjust.works 9 points 3 months ago

He seemed very jolly. He was preening his antennae, folding them over his hands and wiping them off. Very fun to watch

Chemicals in the grass turning our fricken beetles gay!

[–] MuffinHeeler@aussie.zone 3 points 3 months ago

I'd feel happy with those on my head too

[–] boogetyboo@aussie.zone 6 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Might not be a live specimen

[–] doc_dish@lemm.ee 4 points 3 months ago

Or one that's just emerged from its pupa(?)

Disclaimer: I know nothing about the lifecycle of glow worms

[–] atocci@lemmy.world 23 points 3 months ago

Tim Burton is the most Glowworm Beetle director I've ever seen.

Anyone else do a double-take at that thumbnail while quickly scrolling?

...

...

Alrighty then, carry on

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 months ago

Oh good it’s not just me. I was worried I would have to bonk myself.

Anyways…bonk

[–] RamblingPanda@lemmynsfw.com 3 points 3 months ago

I opened expecting something else, not going to lie. But it's a nice little bug.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

As I said in another reply, two words... threadbare merkin.

[–] dmention7@lemm.ee 1 points 3 months ago

Threadbare Merkin would be an excellent band name!

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago

Just got her lashes did.

[–] Damage@feddit.it 6 points 3 months ago

It's gotta have great reception

[–] mayo_cider@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago

Best 5G reception on the block

[–] betahack@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago (2 children)

....that thumbnail was very misleading

[–] psud@aussie.zone 3 points 3 months ago (2 children)

I'm failing to see whatever it is you see, though I clicked through to the full size picture before looking at the thumbnail, so my view of the thumbnail was influenced by having seen the full size picture

[–] oce@jlai.lu 4 points 3 months ago
[–] Dalvoron@lemm.ee 2 points 3 months ago

I don't have thumbnails set on my phone so I only ever saw the full image. That said, I looked at it without my glasses with my arm outstretched and I'm going to guess they saw either buttcrack or titcleft

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 months ago

A threadbare merkin

[–] niktemadur@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

More specifically - this is the most Helena Bonham Carter in a Tim Burton movie... etc

[–] Etterra@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

When you hear radio playing at night and you wake up and see this.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

why does it have curly tim burton antennae?

[–] SoleInvictus@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 3 months ago

Increased surface area. Only male glowworms metamorphose into adult forms and they use their feathery antennae to track females down by their pheromones. Increased antenna surface area helps them pick up those pheromones.

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Or Dr. Seuss.
