I am not able to figure out whatever bluetooth issues I am having. None of my devices stay connected and will never reconnect once disconnected. I have a pair of WH-XM4 and they will not stay connected. Here is what I tried so far:

Reinstall BlueZ

Check for blocking with rfkill

Restart Bluetooth, but I just get this error "Bluez Daemon is not running, blueman-manager cannot continue"

I'm at my wits end. Please help.

I looked up specifically examples of this and didn't find answers, they're buried in general discussions about why compiling may be better than pre-built. The reasons I found were control of flags and features, and optimizations for specific chips (like Intel AVX or ARM Neon), but to what degree do those apply today?

The only software I can tell benefits greatly from building from source, is ffmpeg since there are many non-free encoders decoders and upscalers that can be bundled, and performance varies a lot between devices due to which of them is supported by the CPU or GPU. For instance, Nvidia hardware encoders typically produce higher quality video for similar file sizes than ones from Intel AMD or Apple. Software encoders like x265 has optimizations for AVX and NEON (SIMD extensions for CPUs).

After I install Linux Mint (which is the distro I have settled on), I replace:

1. Thunderbird with Betterbird
2. Firefox with Librewolf (I also install Brave for web services that need a chromium browser).
3. Celluloid / Rythmbox with VLC player
4. Default Libreoffice with latest Libreoffice from source.
5. ClipIt/Parcellite with xfce4-clipman

I find this to be my optimal setup and these software give me the extra quality of life that make my workflows easier.

What software do you replace and install on your distro of choice?

Edit: I forgot to say I replace sudo with doas. That's something my friend told me to do although I personally don't find any immediate working advantage with it.

Many thanks to all those that maintain FOSS. i had setup a pi4 running 32 bit Debian Buster years ago (pandemic days) with OpenMediaVault 5. With the OMV docker and portainer plugin I had various dockers running, but found some dockerhub images weren't supporting 32bit. I had thought ubout updating to 64 bit install but thought I might have headaches, so just blocked the pi from accessing the internet and sidelined the update. Since it is the holidays I figured I would tackle an update.

Scope:

• update to 64 bit
• move from Buster to Bullseye
• move from OMV5 to OMV6
• fix everything that failed including docker.

Step 1 add "arm_64bit=1" in the config.txt file of /boot and reboot. Took a while to boot with lots of drive activity but 64 kernel worked perfectly.

Step 2: run sudo omv-release-upgrade

That is it. Two commands and everything updated perfectly. Nothing to fix.

To me that is an amazing testament to the work put in by everyone for Linux kernel, the OS, OMV devs, and Applications maintainers. Amazing.

This seems like something that would be simple, but I spent a long time trying to figure it out. I figured I'd write a blog post about it in case anyone else has a similar desire.

I am a Linux beginner/amateur and I have sort of had enough of copy and pasting commands I find on the internet without having a good understanding of how they actually work.

I guess my end goal is to be able to comfortably install and use arch Linux with my own customization's and be able to fix it when things go wrong.

What tips/ideas do you have for getting better at navigating the terminal, and getting a better understanding of how the os works. What is a good roadmap to follow? And how did you, advanced Linux user, get to the stage your at now?

Dopo aver con successo e soddisfazione convertito il mio vecchio MacbookPro a Linux (precisamente con ⁨@ufficiozero⁩ ) ora mi piacerebbe convertire anche il mio MacMini  M1 affiancando Linux a macOs. Da ciò che leggo in giro, al momento non sembra possibile. Qualcuno ha idea se prima o poi (e quando)  questo sarà possibile?

I just got Huenicorn installed on my Linux desktop. Been struggling to get hue bridge to sync.

1. I opened the huenicorn executable
2. Typed my Hue Bridge's IP Address
3. When I'm at the API Key screen, I pressed "I don't have credentials yet"
4. It tells me to press the central button on my Hue Bridge and I have one minute to press "Register new user". Tried it several times with no luck.

The Hue Bridge doesn't seem to be an issue as today I got my light strip to sync to it.

I have a Tinker Edge T as a server, and it's running Mendel Linux which is a default debian-based OS recommended by the manufacturer. One thing I really don't like is the fact that if you plug in an HDMI cable and USB keyword, it will always give you access to a terminal as the default user, which doesn't even need a password to become root either. Is there a general Linux way to set a password for the GUI like you can on regular desktop Linux, or otherwise require authentication before you get a terminal or any other functionality, so someone can't just plug an HDMI cable and keyboard into the device and have root access to the entire device?

When I just see my TV taking Linux updates it makes me feel so cozy. For context sake I have a veroV running osmc.

EDIT - UPDATE: Booting live Windows11 USB has worked and BIOS has been updated (but holy cow, Linux live USB feels like it's running on SSD while Windows live USB feels like it's running from floppy disk)

Hi, I have a Yoga Slim 6 14APU8 - Type 82X3 laptop with Fedora Workstation 41 and I've tried to go and update my BIOS but unfortunately they only offer the .exe file to do it from within Windows. I don't want to install Windows just to update my BIOS. I honestly though it will be a matter of few minutes by me just copying the BIOS file on a USB drive and then installing it directly from within BIOS as usual on other devices...

I've tried the sudo fwupdmgr update command but it just says that there is nothing that can be updated.

My current BIOS version is M4CN30WW and the new one is M4CN36WW.

I've tried searching for how to do this and I've found multiple guides using geteltorito but they all say to download the .iso and not the .exe version of the BIOS file but I can't find the .iso version anywhere on their website, or am I just blind or is there some other way to do this?

I'm on Linux for a couple of years and I love it. Distrohoping never interested me though, I'm content with my flavour. But I need to reinstall my OS soon and it gives me headaches. So many settings I changed, applications I installed, configured and forgot about.
Now I read about all you guys constantly distrohopping for fun, how do you even do this? Do you start from scratch, explore everything and leave after months of putting in all the work of making an OS your own!? Or do you just casually check it out a couple of days? What do you do with all your music, pictures, addons, portable software?

update of Void Linux?

I'm currently looking for a new OS, coming from KDE neon and I like it, but the fact I have to FUCKING restart because someone decided to push an OS update that broke my previous install, now the OS freezes my whole PC (never did before!) and I have to restart.

I'm looking for good apps support so Debian? Idk Using it for daily usage (Android/games development) and gaming.

I'm also looking for:

• Wobbly windows (yes useless but cool lol)
• Good customization
• KDE connect support (a must)
• Krunner or equivalent (MacOS like search)
• Idk?

i guess it would make sense because the main philosophy behind cinnamon is to bring back old gnome2 and despise new gnome. it's almost like they're trying to make it better (i believe both cinnamon and gnome are awesome!!) and eventually make cinnamon the default de someday, has there been any sort of rivalry between the devs of both desktop environments?? like, i know it's not possible but what if a gnome update wouldn't let you install cinnamon and vice versa??
