From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

I've been having a serious issue with phantom clicks on a laptop, to a point is nearly impossible to work on a desktop.

At first I assumed it was something related with a bluetooth daemon call that kept returning an error on startup. I forced access to a CLI and managed to uninstall the bluez package but the issue persisted.

I assumed then it was an issue with the mouse itself but after unplugging it completely, using the touchpad had the same behaviour. I also tried tweaking the mouse settings, to no difference.

Finally, I tried booting into Windows, as this machine has a dual boot, and there both mouse and touchpad report no erratic bahaviour.

After a few online searches, I found similar issues reported but back in 2014, mostly related with kernel drivers, which by now must be solved, as the system initially didn't had this issue, with a fresh install.

The only non-repo app the system has is Zoom and, again, it didn't started having this issue when installed.

Can someone spare some advice on this?

My temptation is to just do a fresh install but as I once read somewhere "we don't do that here". :)

The distro being run is Mint, on a generic Intel based laptop.

I'm wondering if that's possible with any desktop environment. Basically I want windows with translucent backgrounds with blurring like shown in this post; except that it always shows the wallpaper right behind the window, even if there are windows between it and the desktop. Normally with blurred background setups like that one, a window will blur the content of whatever windows are behind / beneath it.

For context, I want to teach myself Graphics Design as I had dropped out of college copule years ago for personal reason but still want to learn it.

I have heard from few people online that they have got Affinity running with Bottles or Wine. I really want to use less of Windows whereas possible but I'm unsure how well it performs on Linux and if there are a better alternative from Affinity and Adobe in general.

I hate when people say that they'll only move when it has 100% support

People who say 'cant wait for steamOS to come out so that I can move to it' is also very similar

They never will try Linux, even if what they want comes true

They won't do it, whether they just fear change or think it'll break stuff or they can't bother

And I'm not going to lie, I don't hate them or debate with them for it, I just hate the bold lies they tell just to get with the crowd

"Fuck you Microsoft, I'm moving to Linux" says the individual that would never move if they haven't already

Frankly, I probably wouldn't move either if Windows didn't permanently break my ethernet and WiFi drivers, and reinstalling windows wasn't harder than installing Linux, fucking hell

Either way, these people kick up hype for a Linux that will be so much bigger but they never arrive

Maybe they will, due in fucking 2028 or something when they invent a really easy way to use built in Linux tools to move your files from NTFS to Linux and then when you launch steam you have a perfect library of Linux compatible games that are as good or better than windows

And don't lie, even now with 80% compatibility it feels more like 60%, whether because it depends on the system one runs or because the performance drops just make it not worth it...

At least don't lie that you'll move to Linux at a goal post that you'll just move whenever you get close, maybe say that you'll move to Linux when you finally get a new pc with a new disk or something?

I've been using an AMD 6700 XT for the past few years but have been considering getting a NVIDIA 5070 Ti for raytracing and lesser extent DLSS.

However, I've borrowed a NVIDIA 2060 and am having massive performance issues on the propriety drivers. I'm getting cursor stutters, window movements stuttery, Gnome overview stuttering, etc. Basically the desktop is not nearly as smooth as it is on AMD.

Even Nouveu is a better experience, although that means no Vulkan support unless I were to manually set up NVK.

Is the experience any better for 30 series or 40 series?

Edit: After further thought, I think I will just go for a Radeon 9070 or 9070XT since it's the safer choice; FSR4 seems to be a big upgrade (though I never noticed any major issue even with FSR1), open drivers, and since it will likely be significantly cheaper to get 16GB of VRAM.

Look, I'm a Debian user for 15 years, I've worked in F/OSS for a long time, can take care of myself.

But I'm always on a lookout for distros that might be good fit for other people in my non-tech vicinity, like siblings, nieces, nephews... I'm imagining some distro which is easy for gaming but can also be used for normal school, work, etc. related stuff. And yeah, also not too painful to maintain.

(Well, less painful than Windows which honestly is not a high bar nowadays... but don't listen to me, all tried in past years was to install Minecraft from the MS store... The wound is still healing.)

I have Steam Deck and I like how it works: gaming first, desktop easily accessible. But I only really use it for gaming.

So I learned about Bazzite, but from their description on their main site I'm not very wise:

The next generation of Linux gaming [Powered by Fedora and Universal Blue] Bazzite is a cloud native image built upon Fedora Atomic Desktops that brings the best of Linux gaming to all of your devices - including your favorite handheld.

Filtering out the buzzwords, "cloud native image" stands out to me, but that's weird, doesn't it mean that I'll be running my system on someone else's computer?

Funnily enough, I scrolled a bit and there's a news section with a perfectly titled article: "WTF is Cloud Native and what is all this".

But that just leads to some announcements of someone (apparently important in the community) talking about some superb community milestone and being funny about his dog. To be fair, despite the title, the announcement is not directed towards people like me, it's more towards the community, who obviously already knows.

Amongst the cruft, the most "relevant" part seems to be this:

This is the simplest definition of cloud native: One common way to linux, based around container technology. Server on any cloud provider, bare metal, a desktop, an HTPC, a handheld, and your gaming rig. It’s all the same thing, Linux.

But wait, all I want to run is a "normal" PC with a Linux distro. I don't necessarily need it to be a "traditional" distro but what I don't want is to have it running, or heavily integrated in some proprietary-ish cloud.

So how does this work? Am I missing something?

(Or are my red flags real: that all of this is just to make a lot of promises and get some VC-funding?)

High performance self-hosted photo and video management solution

Hey, so I've been using Hamachi with Haguichi on Linux (Mint) for some time, and for the most part it works fine; however, hamachi will occasionally disconnect and then ask for my password to restart the service. This seems to happen kind of irregularly, and some days it barely happens, while others it seems to happen every 5 minutes.

After some search, I only managed to find a couple of old results - with no solutions - but which suggested it was a memory leak issue. I checked the systemctl logs and it seems like that might be the case:

systemd-coredump[96279]: Process 93832 (hamachid) of user 0 dumped core.
            #11 0x000000000040954f n/a (hamachid + 0x954f)
            #12 0x0000000000462f71 n/a (hamachid + 0x62f71)
            #13 0x0000000000464d10 n/a (hamachid + 0x64d10)
            #14 0x00000000004afe24 n/a (hamachid + 0xafe24)
            #15 0x00000000004e816c n/a (hamachid + 0xe816c)
            #16 0x00000000005005d4 n/a (hamachid + 0x1005d4)
            #17 0x000000000050eb48 n/a (hamachid + 0x10eb48)
            #18 0x0000000000446c9e n/a (hamachid + 0x46c9e)
            #19 0x00000000004bebe2 n/a (hamachid + 0xbebe2)
            #20 0x000000000040709e n/a (hamachid + 0x709e)
            #23 0x00000000004076cf n/a (hamachid + 0x76cf)

I guess my question is, is this a known issue? Does anyone else have the same problem and/or know a fix? And, if not, does anyone know of a good alternative that is available on both Linux and Windows (I'm connecting to people on Windows)?

Thanks in advance.

I've been using linux for more than a decade at this point, but in all that time I've rarely had a disk drive. The fact that this command exists and is just, one of the core utils included with your distro along with su and kill and mount and more is just… so beautiful. 10 years amore with this OS and I'm still learning things that the elders in the audience are snickering at me for only learning 5 minutes ago while they were popping their disk trays open with a single command back when disk drives were a non optional component.
