Aliens can be quite divisive. Some people like the very clean digital look but I prefer the Blu-ray release which has quite a lot of natural grain too it. But if you compare editions, you'll see that over the years, with each release, Cameron has changed the look of the film in regards to colours.

In an ideal world, studios, with directors assistance and approval, would scan the camera negative and leave it at that with no tinkering afterwards. 😄

In regards to Cameron's other films, they've all had various use of AI but Titanic and The Abyss come out really well and I believe The Terminator hasn't done too badly either.

I would just add that if you feel inclined, always research what 4K you'd like to buy next by reading reviews and using sites like https://caps-a-holic.com/ to compare old blurays to the new 4K editions.

It's rare but just because it's a 4K release, that's not always a guarantee that it will be better. Some filmmakers like to use the opportunity to change the way the film looks entirely. Also, some filmmakers are using AI to improve the picture quality (cough! James Cameron) and it doesn't always come out the best. In other words, stay away from True Lies in 4K, it's awful.

If done properly, older films can look wonderful, such as Top Gun, Back to the Future, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Yes, I own those. 😁

I bet importing some of those titles to the UK wouldn't be cheap. Bollocks.

I was carrying a hoover downstairs and slipped. The hoover fell down the stairs faster than me and stopped at the bottom obviously. The wire had partially unspooled and the very British three prong plug was sitting on the ground, pointing straight towards the sky.

Guess where my arse landed once I had finished slipping down the carpeted stairs?

I presume it's the fact they're all just made on a production line like the way all T800,Cyberdyne systems model 101 terminators all look like Arnold.

The fact it looks like Ash means fans are already suspicious of it's intentions, caring more for the preservation of the xenomorph rather than human life. It's also a blatant nostalgic throwback for fans of the original.

Personally, I didn't like the fact it links back to Prometheus. The whole film has too many Easter eggs which was too distracting.

Director Fede Álvarez, says he run out of time to get the look of the character Rook completed to his satisfaction. For the home release, he's apparently spent more money correcting it which according to him, leans more towards the practical animatronic than the CGI face.

I have an old DVDProfiler listing for my DVDs but I think it's incomplete. I emailed the company about restoring my login credentials but they never replied. I have the listing page bookmarked still.

For my Blu-rays and 4Ks, I use the Blu-ray.com app just to keep a simple list. I mostly use it when hunting for films in charity shops and to make sure I don't accidently buy the same film again.

SpoilerDante from Clerks III

I really resonated with the character and how everything is others peoples fault and he rarely bothered to sort his own life out. Feels just like me! 😆 So their death in this film really struck a chord with me and I was in floods of tears.

Blue Shift was originally part of the Dreamcast port of Half Life. The game did leak and it was quite fun to experience it on the DreamCast but the problem was the game was in fairly small chunks and had to load off the CD which made the wait quite painful.

I expect they're 1080p web downloads remuxed for BDRs. Allegedly. If you know about that sort of thing. 😆

I've been tempted to buy The Killer because that's a Fincher film that won't get a physical release I expect.

[–] UKFilmNerd@feddit.uk 7 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Ironic that Willow gets a 4K physical release and the sequel series is gone forever. (Unless you sail the seven seas or I'm sure someone on Etsy has burned them to BDRs. 😆)

Luckily, this isn't for grain removal but to fix mistakes that still bugged Fincher.

Fincher got together with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff and told her how AI was used to achieve the restoration. Fincher mentions the scene in a bar where Detectives Somerset and Mills chat about the case. Turns out, the scene had a teeny tiny mistake in it, but Fincher is known as a bit of a perfectionist, so it probably bothered him.

“In this case, there was this unasked-for and unearned camera pan where a character moved, and then the camera panned over to follow them but followed them late and overshot them and ended up seeing more of the bar than was intended,” Fincher described. A character’s jacket proved to be a real problem in trying to fix the shot, but now, with the help of AI, Fincher was able to get the shot he wanted on the new version.

“So we took three or four different shots from earlier, which had a jacket in them that we liked, and then we input that, and then we had it spit back out AI, and then took the background from where the camera landed and just composited them together.”

Easy peasy! Fincher seems to have also found other uses for AI than just the one bar scene.

“There were shots that I didn’t even realize where I would consider today to be unusably out of focus, and some of those things we were able to go in, make mattes of the section that we wanted, and use AI to at least get the focus in the eyes to be on the soft side, but not completely useless,” the director told Collider.

I was thinking of pickup up the Arrow Video Blu-ray in preparation for the upcoming release of the sequel. Is it just the 4K affected?

[–] UKFilmNerd@feddit.uk 2 points 1 month ago

Beaten by thirteen minutes! 😆 Considering this never had a Blu-ray release, I may have to pick this one up.

The company Kino Lorber previously announced that they will be releasing John Candy's 80s comedy, Summer Rental, on 4K Blu-ray in January. The boutique label has now announced that the following month another beloved John Candy movie will be having a new physical video remastering. Blu-ray.com has revealed that Uncle Buck will get its own Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray release on February 18. This film was a much bigger hit for Candy and is seen as one of his best movies. This is also the film that would give Hughes the idea to write Home Alone with Macaulay Culkin in mind.

The movie stars John Candy, Amy Madigan, Jean Louisa Kelly, Gaby Hoffmann and Macaulay Culkin. The Description reads, "When Cindy (Elaine Bromka) and her husband, Bob (Garrett M. Brown), have to leave town for a family emergency, there is only one person available to babysit for their three kids: Bob's lazy, carefree brother, Buck (John Candy). While he immediately gets along with the two younger children (Gaby Hoffman, Macaulay Culkin), Buck must change his bachelor lifestyle if he wants to be a responsible caregiver for the angst-filled teenager, Tia (Jean Louisa Kelly)."

People still continue to buy the Bose TV Speaker even after we made a dedicated video on it…. To get you to stop, we took to facebook marketplace and gave ourselves the SAME budget and managed to buy a 5.1 surround sound setup with dedicated receivers!

Considering this is the home video section, I thought this would apply to this community. Reminds me of when I had my tiny dirt cheap 5.1 system, which sounded great to me. Especially when playing Bad Company 2 on my Xbox360.

Just in time for the holidays, we can enjoy Ron Howard and George Lucas' family-friendly fantasy adventure film Willow finally arrives on 4K UHD Blu-ray with deluxe SteelBook packaging.

The George Lucas / Ron Howard team-up Willowmight have been something of a box office misfire at release, but the film has grown into a fan-favorite fantasy adventure classic. Now we can enjoy the exploits of Warwick Davis' Willow and his pal Madmartigan and the beautiful Sorsha in full 2160p with HDR. The press release wasn't specific about HDR grade, remember Disney is punching Dolby Vision onto their 4K discs on a case-by-case basis - so this one might not have made the cut. We'll see if any clarification comes out on that. But we can at least expect HDR10 on the BD66 disc with DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio. We also don't have a breakdown of extra features yet, but it's a safe bet those will be on the included Blu-ray. Hopefully, if this sells well, maybe we'll get the abandoned series' first season on disc too.

Over the years, the original Star Wars films have been subject to many changes and additions. According to Lucas, the original cuts have been lost to time. Well, sorry George. We the fans cannot let that happen. This is the story of how the fans saved Star Wars.

This is Part I in a new series I'm creating documenting the fan preservation of the Theatrical Cuts of Star Wars. This episode focuses on Laserdisc Bootlegs.

This bought back some memories. I remember downloading the TR47 bootlegs which were really good copies for the time.

It's time to talk about Fight Club

This month marks 25 years since David Fincher's influential film arrived in theaters, and to celebrate, the filmmaker is overseeing a new 4K Ultra HD remaster of the New Regency and 20th Century Fox film. Fincher is also planning a theatrical re-release early next year, though details

such as a date or the number of theaters

are being kept under wraps.

In addition, Fincher will release a 25th anniversary art book, including new interviews, rare behind-the-scenes material and unearthed visuals. The book arrives via Insight Editions and New Regency.

Count me in for the 4K and the book! Love this film!
