For reasons no one can fanthom

You're talking about it, that's the main reason

For reasons no one can fathom

The ROM hacking community takes this personally.

ROM hacking and well, just retro development like this is awesome. I think there is something to be said about the creativity that comes with a limited canvas and so on

For the one other person who might be wondering, the game works on CFW as well!

[–] nodiet@feddit.de 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Afaik the DS basically has GBA hardware built in, right? So I don't see why there was a chance of it not working

[–] LilBagOfBunnies@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Mostly that it was a GBC game being released in 2023 with the website being the assumed location it would be played. I honestly figured it was just a generic file type that was made in the style or with the constraints of the Game Boy Color, not that it was actually a Color game.

It's obvious right, everyone is talking about this and McDonalds is loving it.

Can someone reply to my comment? I'm trying to make sure I'm able to see comments from other instances. Thank you :)

Thank you ! Also on topic of the post I think it's pretty cool that people are still making games for older consoles. I've been experimenting with making a gbc game with gb studio in my spare time.

[–] odigo2020@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

How are you liking it so far?

[–] RedEagle@lemmyns.xyz 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's pretty seemless! I'm stilling adjusting to the limitations of the gb studio engine but overall it's very intuitive and easy to learn

[–] odigo2020@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

That's awesome to hear, might have to check it out myself.

[–] ash@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It would be so much cooler if they actually released a cartridge for it.

[–] admin@honeyhive-u4873.vm.elestio.app 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Wait there aren’t any actual carts for this? Did they just drop a rom file somewhere? Who at McDonald’s came up with this idea and how can we get them a raise!

[–] ash@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

no its just a download or a site to play it from. No cart. Kinda sad about it, would have been a sick collectable.

[–] whelk@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

I love this so much. I need to break out one of those gameboy studio tools and take a crack at a game of my own.

I watched a few minutes of that. Appreciate the link to the game play.

🪺😂 honestly a hot idea. The article is fun to read too

Key words for follow-up reading :)

  • GB Studio
  • atari2600
  • the Tetris chicken nugget in prc

Retro handhelds have really revived people's appetites for retro-styled games. There's a lot of fluff on itch.io, but there's good stuff there too.

[–] djidane535@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

It's nice to see stuff like this for the GameBoy :). I have to try this on my Analogue Pocket :).

[–] odigo2020@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

That's awesome, might have to check it out myself.

[–] TragicNotCute@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I think I knew in my heart it wasn't going to be a purple Grimace cartridge, but I was still disappointed when I learned it wasn't.

[–] fryman@programming.dev 1 points 1 year ago

The music in this game is way better than it needs to be.

[–] neonfire@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If there isn't a cartridge then it's just a ROM not a game imo. I know it's pedantic to specify but it matters when there are people who've released modern GB cartridges

[–] iThinkergoiMac@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago

It’s a game, just not a cartridge. Just because it’s in a file format doesn’t make it not a game. I’m planning to check it out on my GB Advance SP with an EZ Flash cartridge, so it’ll be playing on actual hardware.

[–] Pluto_Is_A_Planet@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

That's pretty cool.

[–] judog24@cheddarcrackers.club 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I played Grimace's Birthday on my Analogue Pocket. It's surprisingly decent. I wish there was a mode that focused on getting a big combo similar to the OlliOlli daily challenges.

[–] Helvedeshunden@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Agreed! I played it on my FunKey S while waiting for a pickup yesterday and it was pretty fun and looked great. I think I'll put it on my Anbernic 351V because the grinding was a little tricky to nail with the tiny buttons on the FunKey S. But it is cool that they essentially put accessibility options in there to let it auto-grind if you're on a mobile device.

[–] psysok@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

Its a Grimasance! I want a purple physical cartridge. It would please our Lord Grimace, may he reign in terror forever.

My 67 year old mom's got a new rebuilt and improved Game Boy Colour. She wanted a switch, but dear lord watching her try to operate mine..so I was like hey what about a new Game Boy, there's people on Etsy that rebuild them. She's happier than a pig on shit, and I don't have to answer endless support calls + she's got a super sized library to work through from my old Game Boy games. Will have to check this out to see if I can get her one of these.

[–] blindsight@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

From other comments, it sounds like there are no physical carts.

An Everdrive would probably work and they're only like $25 for a Chinese one, plus a few bucks for a micro SD. It's not like you'd need a big one!

[–] EsotericEmbryo@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I used an everdrive for my megadrive (lol) and it worked flawlessly! I highly recommend they get one of these for their grandmother that is a great idea!

[–] EsotericEmbryo@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This is such a fantastic idea! The gameboy was such an amazing system and it's so awesome to see it still being appreciated and even games on it being experienced for the first time by newcomers. My father was wanting to get into gaming as well but one of his main gripes was "there's too many buttons to learn" I think I might just get him a gameboy! Idk why I didn't consider that before thank you so much for the idea!

[–] GrindingGears@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago

My dad's actually a bigger gamer than I am. He is being stubborn about retiring, but I'm going to get him a PS5 when he retires in the next year or so. He was also begging me to just get my mom something simple, as he too, didn't want to have to explain how to use a Switch to her all the time. The Game Boy is such a good idea for those kind of folks, and you should see what people are doing to those things now. I almost bought myself one, not going to lie.
