  • Brush: ThΓ€ter Faux Ivory 29mm 2-band Silvertip

  • Razor: Thiers Issard Le Grelot 6/8 Full Hollow (Straight Shave 366)

  • Lather: Shulton - Old Spice - Soap

  • Post Shave: Shulton - Old Spice - Aftershave

  • Post Shave: Thayers - Lavender - Toner

This setup brings back memories of my father and of my very early days of shaving. And, I used Old Spice aftershave well into my 30's so lots of memories associated with this scent.

This razor has an edge that I put on it last spring. I really noticed the difference between that edge and what I'm creating with my current process. Today's edges are equally sharp and much more comfortable.

I'm making the same observation with my edges. So now I have 20+ edges I want to redo πŸ˜…

I wonder when we'll stop making noticeable progress.

That's what September was like for me. Refreshing razors to update them with the new process. It was like getting new razors without buying anything.

I wonder when we’ll stop making noticeable progress.

I see it as a process of refinement. Getting a razor sharp is pretty easy, but getting it to be "comfortable" is a real challenge because there are different definitions of what "comfortable" means.

In September, I stumbled across a way for me to get very comfortable and sharp edges reliably with a variety of finishing stones. I passed this on to another professional sharpener and he has seen the same results. But I think there's a lot to learn. I like ultra sharp edges because they suit my shaving style. Some people prefer edges that are less sharp but somehow still produce comfortable BBS shaves. I really don't know how to do that "on demand" and repeatably. So from my perspective there's still a lot to learn.

Firefighter

  • Brush: Dogclaration LG 2022 Mystery Brush (B16)
  • Razor: Zwilling J. A. Henckels Friodur Unnumbered 8/8" ( hollow ground, stainless steel, round point)
  • Lather: Noble Otter Firefighter
  • Aftershave: Noble Otter Firefighter
  • Fragrance: Stirling Soap Company Island man

Summery scents on a dreary autumn morning. So good. The big 8/8 continues to astound me with how smooth it is. It feels almost like a coated blade, and I don't understand how it's possible. I'm now thinking I should try to refresh my Frio 14 blade the same way I did with this to see whether I can reproduce this edge.

  • Brush: Maggard 24mm Synthetic
  • Razor: Gillette Flat Bottom Tech
  • Blade: Personna Lab Blue (2)
  • Lather: Barrister & Mann - Roam - Soap
  • Post Shave: Southern Witchcrafts - Incorporeal - Aftershave
  • Post Shave: Eufros - Dama Noche - Balm
  • Fragrance: Brut - EdT

Unscented aftershave? I did AA two years ago using SW unscented soap/AS, and this has been sitting on the shelf ever since. I was just curious if the aftershave is "my style".

The ring of death on Roam has been around for a while, and yesterday I felt like maybe I didn't load enough soap. I spread the soap out around the bottom of the container, and today I had no problem loading an ample amount.

Unscented AA sounds tough 😱

That was your first AA, right?

I wanted to see if the Frio 472 was good tonight as it was last night. It was very nice again. A very comfortable evening shave.

  • Razor: Karve Overlander
  • Blade: Astra Superior (Blue)
  • Lather: House Of Mammoth - Sonder - Soap
  • Post Shave: House Of Mammoth - Sonder - Aftershave

Excellent shave. New blade today worked great. I can’t remember what razor or why I disliked this blade in the past.

Dot, Dot, Daaaaash

  • Brush: Dogclaration LG 2022 Mystery Brush (B16)
  • Razor: Zwilling J. A. Henckels Friodur Unnumbered 8/8" ( hollow ground, stainless steel, round point)
  • Lather: Imaginary Authors Telegrama
  • Aftershave: Imaginary Authors Telegrama
  • Fragrance: Creed Wind Flowers

Telegrama and Wind Flowers play so well together, without being similar. Where Telegrama is warm and a bit spicy, Wind Flowers is cool and floral, but still there's some common theme that I struggle to put my finger on.

Nov 2, 2023 - Theme Thursday: A Shave to Reminisce

  • Prep: Klar - Activated Charcoal - Face Soap
  • Brush: Trotter Handcrafts Souls 26mm T1 Fan Knot
  • Razor: Chiseled Face Legacy (Aluminum)
  • Blade: Gillette Nacet [7]
  • Lather: Westman Shaving - Alma - Soap
  • Post Shave: HAGS - Creature Lives - Aftershave Lotion

Today is DΓa de los Muertos in some cultures and All Souls Day in others. I took it as an opportunity to try out a new brush named Souls from Trotter. This particular batch of hair is particularly soft.

The Nacet worked much better for me today in the Legacy than it did in the Karve yesterday. I'm still impressed by the West Man base, which makes an incredible lather.

Alma is a scent that invokes a happy feeling from my past, but I struggle to place the exact memory. Maybe it doesn't quite fit with the theme, but it did work well this morning.

Still being the week of Halloween, I went with HAGS Creature Lives as the post. It's a dupe of Bleu de Chanel and it fit nicely with Alma.
