Jun 12, 2023 - Mammoth Monday: Shire II

I wanted to compare OG Shire with the new reformulation, so I used a sample of Shire 2 this morning. The bones are still Shire, but it is a matured scent. The tobacco note is richer, the grass note is still lovely and more pronounced; it's listed as vetiver in the scent notes this time.

The violet and open air opening notes seem to be further in the distance now. I think I slightly prefer the charm that the opening notes of the original scent provided to the experience. It's as if Bilbo has grown since his adventures in The Hobbit, is more worldly now, is celebrating his eleventy-first birthday, and therefore cannot fully return to the innocence of the Shire he once knew. Luckily, for now at least, I can return to the Shire of bygone days.

Still, I appreciate the evolution of the scent and the direction that @mammothben@sub.wetshaving.social decided to take it.

  • Brush: Grizzly Bay Shire 26mm V18 Fanchurian

  • Razor: Filarmonica 12 Doble Temple 5/8" Full Hollow (Straight Shave 251)

  • Lather: House of Mammoth - Shire 2 - Soap

  • Post Shave: Thayers - Cucumber - Toner

  • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Shire 2 - Splash

2 passes. Face lather. Excellent shave.

I did the right side of my face with a Rolls Razor that is owned by @Tetriside as an edge test. When I transitioned to the Fili 12, I was surprised by how rough it felt by comparison. For me, the edge on that Rolls was just effortless.

You can't go wrong with Shire 2 (IMHO), and the Shire brush is ultra luxurious as is the Shire Lancaster towel (though I actually prefer the larger, equally soft and absorbent, ""plush"" car detailing towels available online).

Edit: s/Grisly/Grizzly/g

[–] Impressive_Donut 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I’m waiting until July to roll out my Rolls! Though I did a little test on the back of my wrist and the hairs fell like dead trees in a hurricane.

First of all, big thanks to @djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social for posting the SOTD thread today. The bot is having trouble and as a non-coder I’m reliant on GPT-4 to actually make it go for me. Fortunately, I think I see the problem and hopefully it will work tonight. If not, DJ will post the thread again.

I was very pleased with this shave. As I mentioned in previous posts, since I have no thrill left I’ve decided to start using DEs again just make things interesting. I’ve tried the SuperSpeed (waaaaaaaaaay to mild) and the Tech (too mild but not in a bad way). Decided to do the Slim for the next several shaves and I got to say that with the slim on 9 it dealt with several days of growth like it wasn’t there. Ended up with a really nice feeling shave with no irritation.

This is my first SOTD on Lemmy, and I’m happy I remembered it was Mammoth Monday to use some Mammoth products for this first SOTD!

  • Post Shave: CeraVe Daily Moisturizer

I'm not committing to killing a tub anytime soon, but I am going to try to kill some samples. I got this huge sample several years ago at the Maggard Meet. Although I have used it several time there is still a significant amount left. Maybe I'll kill it by the end of summer.

  • Razor: Gillette Superspeed
  • Blade: Feather (DE) (1)
  • Lather: Chiseled Face – Gearhead
  • Post Shave: House of Mammoth – Shire 2
  • Fragrance: House of Mammoth – Shire 2

Back from my trip. Had to mow down growth since Friday night so a feather it was. I’d prefer to have used a different soap but was in a rush. HoM splashes are the only methanolated ones I have so it was an easy choice since I wanted cooling after being outside. Good shave, got some splash burn but also the coolant gives me that sensation. Let’s get blackout week started.

Good pairing. Didn't feel up to the sweetness of Dranks today, and this kept it on theme for Mammoth Monday. Winning.

I forgot about Mammoth Monday. I had been on a pretty consistent streak of Mammoth soap and Mammoth Smash brush on Mondays.

Bummer.

  • Prep: Splash of hot water
  • Brush: Moar Boar!
  • Razor: Weck Sextoblade
  • Blade: Kismet
  • Lather: ZM The Watchman (sample from J33p)
  • Post Shave: Lucky Tiger Splash
  • Post Shave: Proraso Sensitive Balm

In all this was a pretty good shave. I spent a bunch more soap, and time making lather than in previous shaves and ended up with a much thicker lather. I'm also getting better with the Weck, as this is the second time I've done both a North to South, and South to North shave with it, and remained nick free.

Travel prep shave

  • Razor: GEM Micromatic Clog-Pruf Peerless (gen 2)
  • Blade: Personna GEM PTFE
  • Brush: Boti Laminate brush with motherlode knot
  • Lather: House of Mammoth Shire
  • Aftershave: House of Mammoth Shire 2 splash

My last shave from home for a few days before hopping on a plane to bad weather, worse food, and Mary fucking Poppins.

Had to explain to the travel department that it is impossible for me to travel without blades and that they will have to pay for checked luggage😅

Shire was delish as always, and the Peerless is fun.

Happy Reddit Blackout Day!

June 12, 2023 – Like Stepping Into Humphry Bogart’s Office

  • Brush: MRed 26 mm Badger
  • Razor: Focus Tritok R63 Slant
  • Blade: Personna Platinum Chrome (3)
  • Preshave: Baxter Shave Tonic
  • Post Shave: Old Spice – Indian

Easily the best shave yet with the Focus and it really all comes down to getting the technique down, which should be obvious by this point in my westshaving adventures but I’m always inpatient with a new razor. The secret to using this slant is to, get this, slant it. Once I learned the right angle it sailed, though I still struggled keeping that angle on my second, XTG pass. An absolutely stellar shave in the end, though.

I finally fixed this MRed brush over the weekend, the first brush I’ve ever set myself. the head fell out on its own accord so really I was just gluing it back in but I think I set it a bit deeper somehow and now it feels soooo much better. Before it had too much splay and the bulb head felt kind of awkward. Now, it’s got the prefect amount of stiff and scritch. Maybe it’s just psychological or maybe I am actually the greatest brush setter of all time. I set a boar brush in a new handle this weekend as well so we’ll have to wait and see.

Finally, Guy Noir. This isn’t my first time with Chiseled Face’s base but it is my first time with Guy Noir and it is stellar. Weirdly, off the (sample) puck I got coconut and wondered what that had to do with any gumshoe, even the comical Guy Noir. But the moment you lather it the tobocca comes out and the scent is just pitch perfect. This isn’t, to me, the scent that a noir gumshoe would wear it’s the scent of a noir gumshoe. If you walked into Bogart’s venisian-blind-shadowed office and he ran those doeful eyes over your gams this is exactly what it would smell like. It’s really quite stunning.

  • Fragrance: Noble Otter - Monoi de Tahiti

Hello everyone, good to see some familiar ~~faces~~ usernames here. This is my first time posting here so apologies in advance if the formatting is botched/I quadruple post/any other shenanigans.

On to the shave, this giant and dense knot continues to destroy this soap; it's funny that this has become my go-to soap killing brush, moreso than MOAR BOAR, which seems reasonable in comparison. Nordost is a great scent but I look forward to replacing it with something new once this tub is gone. Been eyeballing Catie's Bubbles sandalwood soap recently and may not be able to resist temptation much longer.

[–] Old_Hiker 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Good ol' Ruby's Green. I loved that soap and wish I had bought a tub of it. I only had a huge 1oz sample the artisans were passing out at the Maggard Meet several years ago when they released the scent. It never really sold which is why there was only one run of it.

[–] merikus 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I sometimes wonder if Eric and Sammy realize what a legendary place their work holds in our hobby. Hope they’re doing well.

[–] Old_Hiker 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The last I talked to them they were doing great. Eric was moving up in his Naval career. They had their priorities right. I miss them, but I'm happy for them.

[–] merikus 3 points 1 year ago

That's great to hear. I remember that Eric got a major promotion which is why they shut down. Hope things continue to work out well for them.

[–] bigwalleye 3 points 1 year ago

huh, i didnt know there was only one run. i just remember thinking wow that sounds like it would smell great! got some left still, but it's getting down there.

  • Razor: Gillette Slim
  • Blade: 7 O’Clock – Super Stainless (Green) (1)
  • Lather: Stirling Soap Co. – Glacial, Citron

Spent last week on a Caribbean cruise with the family. Started off my first morning back with a 4 mile run around the neighborhood. Not a fan of the swampy conditions, but that’s what I get for living in Florida. Had a nice cool shower with Stirling Glacial Lemon bath soap to cool off followed by a nice cool noggin scrape with Glacial Citron and the Gillette Slim. Finished it all off with some Tangerine Creeper to keep things chilly.

Fuck Spez.

What's different between the SS and the SR (except the fancier handle)?

[–] gfdoto 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

The geometry is different. The SS has a very pronounced lip that is supposed to help stretch the skin a bit, but in practice kind of forces you to use a slightly steeper angle of approach. The SR is the newest model and tones down the lip quite a bit so it feels a bit more natural to use. The SR also has more weight to it. I generally prefer the SR after getting it but revisited the SS again lately which was fun to use as well.

Here is a great page comparing the various offerings.

A very comfortable shave. The ASCO blade was very smooth and sharp enough. It reminded me a bit of the Gillette Silver Blue. I will see if it changes with more shaves but the first shave was good.

6/12/23

This Gen 1 Fili 14 DT just showed up yesterday. I gave it a quick polish and honed it up. It still has minor cosmetic issues, but nothing that will affect performance. This was my first time with a Fili and also my first time with an 8/8 thin grind. It felt wonderful. Light and soft as silk. A couple more test shaves to make sure it's solid, and I will revist the edge again.

My post shave was a little louder than usual, but I don't think I loaded enough into my brush. I attribute the spicyness of the splash to trying to get lather out of my brush that it didn't have. All in all a super close and nice shave, no nicks or irritation.

Assuming this stays in my rotation, it will make number 7. I also have 7 sets of Mammoth. Hmmmm... I may go a full week with a different razor and mammoth set.

[–] djundjila 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

What are the seven straights and the seven Mammoth scents?

[–] gcgallant 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Congrats! I don't think that it gets better than a Gen1 Fili 14. For a Gen 1, the overall condition of your razor looks excellent! I've tweaked the edge on mine twice; first to correct a (very, very) minor geometry issue, then to go for ultimate thinness (the previous owner used tape - I normally go tapeless).

I'd be astonished if this doesn't stay in your rotation. I can cover 7 days of HoM with 7 straights. @djundjila can probably cover 7 days with 14 HoM soaps and 14 straights. Maybe this should be a thing.

[–] whosgotthepudding 3 points 1 year ago

Thank you! The only possible way it wouldn't stay, is if the temper is trashed. So far, though, I don't see anything to indicate that. Took a great edge and felt awesome all the way through, so fingers crossed!

[–] Impressive_Donut 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You started with the right one. It only gets better or worse than Stag!

[–] Glass_Procedure7497 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Better, I think. This one smells the worst to me, then Pine Tar. The other eight all smell really nice. Except maybe Cryogen, which isn't bad, I'm just not a big fan of menthol. Maybe after I use it I'll like it a lot.

June 12, 2023 – Caught in the Rain

  • Brush: DS Cosmetic Jade Tuxedo 24mm
  • Razor: Headblade ATX
  • Blade: Personna Twin Pivot (12)
  • Lather: Shannon’s Soaps – Piña Colada
  • Post Shave: Stirling Soap Co. – Unscented

I will always remember getting caught in a sudden downpour while working a few years ago. If you know anything about working with children with Down Syndrome, you know how stubborn they can sometimes be. I had to help a kiddo who decided to have a shutdown while riding bikes and just as the skies began a steady shower. I got to him, we traversed the quarter mile back to the bike shed where my coworker was waiting as the shower turned into a downpour, put everything away and sought a more arrid location. At the end of the day, I couldn’t help but retort, “Now that we’ve been caught in the rain, I must ask if you like Piña Coladas.” I will always think about that moment.

June 12, 2023 - Mammoth - Monday

  • Razor: Karve CB C Solid Bar
  • Blade: Gillette 7 O’Clock Super Stainless Green (7)
  • Lather: House of Mammoth - Alive
  • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Alive

The kill of Alive is almost there. Just a small bit left, and not enough to load the big pig. Later this week, I’ll finish it off with a synthetic. Probably not enough soap left to load any of badger brushes. Decent shave, but could have done better on my right cheek. Not buffing or touching up for a while, so needed a bit better on the atg pass than I got. Oh well, gotta go finish making dinner. Made the pork shoulder roast I had intended to make yesterday. It was at 131F when I came up to shave, target is 185F to have it sliced vs. pulled. It’s been raining today, so I didn’t put it on the smoker. I don’t like cooking in the rain.

First lemmy shave! Woot! The shave was really nice. Glacial Satsuma is a fantastic soap. Just a fantastic warm citrus smell and the great Stirling quality. The perma-sharps do a fantastic job in the Henson. I think I'm going to buy an aggressive AL13 during the next Maggard sale to see the difference.

I got a razor as a gift recently, and although the razor is too aggressive for me, the handle that came with it is really quite good. I don't have any handles similar to it, so I'm going to keep the handle. It has nice knurling and it's probably the grippiest handle I have. It adds a lot of weight to the otherwise nimble Chiseled Face Titanium razor, but I don't mind.
