Summary

Springfield, Ohio’s Haitian community is experiencing an exodus following Donald Trump’s re-election and renewed threats to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which allows many Haitians to live and work legally in the U.S.

Fear of deportation has driven families to relocate to places like Boston, New Jersey, and Canada.

TPS protections, which cover 300,000 Haitians, could face legal challenges, but experts argue mass deportations are unlikely in the short term.

Haitian workers have revitalized Springfield’s economy, and their departure could severely impact local businesses and neighborhoods.

"But experts argue mass deportations are unlikely in the short term"

Okay, but like. Long term planning is a thing. The long term is in fact something you need to consider in the present, especially for an action that you might only have a limited window to undertake

Yeah, the Nazis didn't start rounding up Jewish people immediately either

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 27 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I've been trying to explain that to my mother, who doesn't want us leaving. She's Jewish. She should know better, but she thinks we're overreacting. Our daughter is queer, so we don't think we are. I said to her, Kristalnacht didn't happen on day one, but by the time it happened, it was too late.

Every thing trumpians disagree with or is pure fascism is a joke to them.

Everything is fake news, so if Trump says something stupid, he just says it's fake

Trump will be using the justice department and IRS to attack his enemies, and by the time people realize what is happening, it will be difficult to go back

[–] badelf@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 5 days ago

It's not the Justice or IRS or even FBI/CIA I worry about. Trump said somewhere that he'd have no problem using the US Military against Americans. He probably already has a plan to replace all the generals who might have a conscience or be loyal to the consititution (and not him).

Racists and other scumbags see this as an absolute win.

We want you to leave and stop using our country's services and supports .... but we want you to stay as slaves that we can abuse.

Let's see how long it takes for people to go "Please come back"

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 9 points 5 days ago (2 children)

How long did it take the brexiters?

[–] Traister101@lemmy.today 9 points 5 days ago

Like 3 years iirc. Though they started getting quite within a couple months and by a year in few people were defending it already.

Haitian workers have revitalized Springfield’s economy, and their departure could severely impact local businesses and neighborhoods.

Sounds like wishful thinking, but I certainly hope so. I hope people there can't get the services they need because the rednecks don't want you do the jobs the Haitians were doing.

But, probably not.

[–] ElcaineVolta@kbin.melroy.org 18 points 5 days ago (1 children)

there have been several interviews with local business owners in the last few months and they've said publicly that the Haitian influx completely saved their city's economy

[–] sxan@midwest.social 1 points 5 days ago

I can believe it, and I really do hope it has an impact. After this election, I'm doubly pessimistic about progressive outcomes.

[–] zabadoh@ani.social 9 points 5 days ago

Maybe the Haitians' employers in Springfield should have campaigned harder against Trump.

Or maybe even Ohio politicians in their state's economic interest?

But no....
