It's amazing to see how many communities are joining in on the blackout. It's also sad as fuck all.

I've been agitating, in what limited capacity I can, to make to this happen.

It still hurts....

Cheer me up Lemmy! This is likely my new home!

EDIT: y'all are awesome, thank you!

Before Netflix, there was Blockbuster.
Before YouTube, there was Metacafe and janky websites hosting Flash or Quicktime Player.
Before Spotify, there was PeopleSound and iTunes gift cards.
Before Discord, there was IRC and AOL Chatrooms.
Before Facebook, there was MySpace and Friendster.
Before iPhone, I had an LG Dare and Palm Pre. Good god!
Before Reddit, there was Digg, Slashdot and Fark.

Something better always comes along. Especially if that "better" is tied to a streamlined, easy to use, easy to learn UI.

Reddit would've never gotten as big as it did without third party support. Not just apps like Apollo, RIF and Narwhal - but tools like Imgur and RES.

Lemmy and "The Federation" (I'm not quite yet sold calling it the Fediverse...) has a lot of potential to be that "better than Reddit" online space. Nobody owns all of it, so there's safeguards against the things that we're blacked out.

And it's partially why its a fixer-upper.

We, the community, are going to need to make Lemmy the space we want it to be. That means competition between instances and servers, that means user generated tools and content. I read the RIF developer is working on a Tildes app for iOS and Android. Mlem iOS app is in early Beta, but are working hard to have a stable release for 6/30. Jerboa's out on Android already and folks seems to like it so far.

Give it time. We're all new. And whether it's here or somewhere else - we always land on our feet. Maybe the only thing we have in common with u/spez : there's nowhere to fail but up.

This comment is great. I want to see it grow and develop without some big corporation

Pick a community you want that doesn't exist, and create it. Then start uploading regular content. Or just pick one that does exist and start uploading regular content.

This is how you bring the magic back.

I was agitating too.

But nobody's dying. Yes, communities are being broken up and fragmented. But the individuals who made up those communities are still there. They still have thoughts and opinions to share. One way or another, they WILL be back.

This has happened many times before. I've seen it. It will happen again. But maybe, this time, the Fediverse will provide a safe home for the best of those communities to be safe here...free from the greed of our psychotic ruling class.

Myspace came and went.
RIM/Blackberry came and went.
Digg came and went.

Email has been there the whole time. Because it's a protocol. ActivityPub is another protocol which means the content using it will last longer than the hosts as the data is more fluid and can easily be moved.

It's alright pal. You're a part of something RIGHT NOW and in the end that is what matters. It's the journey not the destination.

Thank you for that.

Leaving reddit after a decade of near daily use feels like breaking up from a toxic relationship... I guess that's what it actually is in reality tho lol

I'm on PST and was NOT AT ALL ready for subs to start blacking out so early hahaha

[–] FaceDeer@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

The ones that are permanently blacking out are the hardest. I kept telling myself that if nothing else, at least I could visit the pale shadows of the old places I enjoyed via desktop. But /r/dndmemes is probably closing forever and I wasn't quite ready for that.

There's /c/dndmemes@sh.itjust.works, though, and perhaps others eventually. So the magic may someday return.

u/spez - lemmy citizen detected! Capture, examine and extract resources

[–] arcrust@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago

Lmao. I uninstalled my apps before ei went to bed last night to specifically prevent that haha

Reddit is special but I think will move on when it finally dies because of stupid corporate decisions, and I say this as someone who has 200K karma on Reddit. The people is what made Reddit so special and we will find them again.

Maybe make a community or listen to good music?

It's worth remembering that what made Reddit a good place to be is the community and not greedy CEO's, so the spirit of the site will always live on.

It may not be forever, and this reddit pause will hopefully be the kickstart for the fediverse of reddit-likes :)
