People! Pay attention! THIS is why censorship is so bad. THIS is the slippery slope it leads to. Censoring information is just the first step in controlling the public, and keeping them uninformed/misinformed.

It's the same as burning books. It's the same as shutting down websites. It's the same as only allowing state only channels to report news.

Back in the 80s the USA knew about chernobyl about a week after it happened. Russian citizens didn't know for 3-4 weeks later.

China knew about Covid in August of 2019. They tried to supress the news until it finally leaked in November 2019.

Now russia wants to supress information of how badly the "special military operation" is going......almost 3 years into a 3 day operation.

So make sure you take note when people around you try to supress information, and ask WHY they want to do that. Looking at you, Florida.....

[–] Vitaly@feddit.uk 22 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Well, russia can do it easily because it's an authoritarian regime which means they can do whatever the fuck they want with their country(putin and his friends) and people can't day anything because they will be sent to today's version of russian gulag

And my point is, it's starting to creep in here, in America, because for some reason nearly half the country find it more important to "win", than to find legitimate solutions, and form policy that works for everyone. They'd rather screw themselves, and bow to facism, than help "the other side" as a biproduct of helping themselves.

[–] LainTrain@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 1 month ago

There is no policy that "works for everyone" when we cannot agree on the basic facts of reality. If one side says "we shouldn't pollute the sky so much that we can never see the sun" and the other side says "there is no sky", there is no way forward, only upwards, twirling, twirling towards freedom.

Where is it starting to creep in here in america, exactly? Aside from a billionaire purchasing a microblogging site so that he can spread white supremacist propaganda?

Have you not heard of all these red states that ban books, burn them, and have begun censoring the internet? Like 6 states now can't access pornhub because those states have decided that those websites are illegal in their state.

Well, do you think that stops at JUST porn??? Did you not follow the net neutrality battle of the past 15 years? Have you not heard of project 2025?

They take 2 inches, we push back 1 3/4th inches. They push 2 more inches, we push back 1 3/4th inches. Well that just means they've gained 1/2 an inch. Now apply this same mentality to at LEAST the second term of Obama. It's a continual thing that just keeps on going a little bit worse everyday. And does not have an endgame in sight. They want more for themselves, and less for everybody else. They want things to be like russia basically. They want a nation of uninformed, easily manipulated, easy to control consumers. They want to control the narrative of what YOU need to buy, and what you're ALLOWED to do with your life. That's why they're anti-abortion. An aborted fetus is just one less consumer for them to make money off of. They don't give a shit about "purity of life". They care about money, power, and control. It's ALL interconnected, and the internet is the biggest tool humanity has EVER had to combat their agenda.

And my point in all of this is, there are people out there, who are completely unaware, not caring that their rights are being taken away, little by little as the years go on. Nobody looks for it. Nobody seems to notice. And that's the point of this, is to MAKE people aware. To point it out, and let people know to watch their surroundings. Question things around themselves. Why are things the way that they are? Follow it's roots. Figure it out through independant research. A well informed populace is the biggest hinderance towards a facist agenda.

because those states have decided that those websites are illegal in their state

Not even a little bit. PornHub isn't blocked in those states by those states, and it certainly isn't illegal in those states. Those states are blocked by PornHub themselves, because those states enacted laws making it mandatory that PornHub and other porn websites verify visitor's ages. PornHub didn't want to comply with that so they just opted to block access from those states. Absolutely ridiculous laws, but we should get our facts straight.

[–] knightly@pawb.social 7 points 1 month ago

Seems like a distinction without much difference to me.

[–] CarbonatedPastaSauce@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

There are plenty of red states that have started to censor what kids can be taught in school and what books libraries can have, and when they don't succeed they just shut the library down. It's been all over the news for the last few years so I'm surprised you haven't noticed.

That's censorship of the worst kind. Free access to knowledge is the foundation of freedom. Without education, the populace becomes much easier to control by those that seek to do so through nefarious means.

Russians: We had a nuclear incident

Americans: it must be really bad then

Russians: We never said it's bad

Americans: Listen, if it was not bad, you wouldn't even admit you had a nuclear incident.

[–] tacosanonymous@lemm.ee -5 points 1 month ago (2 children)

This is, in fact, bad but please don’t advocate for slippery slope arguments.

[–] LainTrain@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] explodes@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's a slippery slope that's why

[–] Nommer@sh.itjust.works 22 points 1 month ago (2 children)

So does that mean less bots trying to steal my steam credentials?

[–] iAmTheTot@sh.itjust.works 21 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] Vitaly@feddit.uk 6 points 1 month ago

Sounds good to me

[–] Evotech@lemmy.world 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Block steam, then the uprising will begin.

[–] nutsack@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Looks like Matrix is about to see an influx of users. And they can't shut down Matrix.

[–] kurcatovium@lemm.ee 6 points 1 month ago

I highly doubt regular users will exchange Discord for Matrix. Don't get me wrong, Matrix is great and all, has some great features, but given its open decentralized way it is and probably always will be mostly for tech savvy people. Now given how half of the Discord (the part I know) is memes and gifs spam, it's not really easily reproducible with Matrix. At least last time I checked Element still didn't have gif picker...

[–] mp3@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago

Sounds like a good thing overall.

[–] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Many Russians already use matrix, they may not use it seriously but they use it.

I mean in the past few days I've seen like 20 Russian trolls, spamming scat porn, racial slurs, racist memes, extremist memes, you name it.

So yeah I would say that matrix is already decently popular among Russians. Maybe not for legitimate use but it's still definitely popular among them.

[–] andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago

I doubt it's anyhow important for them, it's just Discord is one anothee channel to block that isn't used by his core support base, and the goal is to block everything or\and draw nice monthly reports about that process.

This is great news. It should help justify banning TikTok! We all work together to save the children now! \s
