Posting the update here because most of the users of RDX come from Lemmy community only.

Why?

A lot of users asked for a more polished viewer with more features and users in the EU now can not add web apps to home screen, so I spent some time building an iOS app. You can also save images and videos/gifs from Reddit now. It's stil completely free (with an optional donate option available), the web app also works.

You can download the app here

My reddit web viewer still works! Story: When reddit killed 3rd party apps, I uploaded a web viewer I have been using for myself to Github pages for everyone to use...

If you want to lurk on Reddit, you can use this web reader I built for myself when I got inspired by the Apollo app years ago

thanks, im gonna use it for porn

[–] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Honestly, that's the only reasonable use for Reddit anymore.

[–] SeekPie@lemm.ee 0 points 5 months ago

Well there's also niche communities with useful info too.

[–] crawancon@lemm.ee 0 points 5 months ago (2 children)

let reddit die. don't view its content. fuck spez.

[–] BossDj@lemm.ee 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Still waiting for Twitter to die first. Been waiting for a decade to see Facebook die. I'm not hopeful

[–] eth0slash0@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago

Be the change you wish to see in the world. Also, fuck spez.

[–] MigratingtoLemmy@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago

Unfortunately a lot of good homelab, Networking, security and other niche knowledge is still on reddit.

Technically one could just archive the relevant subs from reddit using an automated crawler and never have to visit the actual website again, both not everybody is self-hosting to that extent. This is for people who haven't self-hosted yet

[–] Xamith@lemmy.ca 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I sometimes use RDX to check out some small communities on reddit I miss. So first off, thanks! Secondly, is there a way to collapse comments or skip to the next root comment?

[–] overdevs@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Double tap any comment? Guess I should leave this as a tip for new users because a lot of people ask me this.

Spez can get fucked. Not going to lurk there, but if I do need to ever view any reddit content, the best fuck you way of doing it would be to use a third party app and not see a single ad. So yeah, I'll give it a try if you release an Android version. Any plans?

[–] overdevs@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago (7 children)

Some people have asked about an Android app so maybe I will try to ship it by the end of this month. Thing is, I see thousands of users using the website but feedback/contributions etc are so small I don't even know what people want. I mean I am not expecting 5 star reviews/donations from every user using it but people don't even give good/bad feedback. I also don't want to force tracking because that's what I myself despise. So there is not way to know what people want unless they use the feedback form and tell me.

[–] Devdogg@lemmy.ml 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I want an android version of this. I will use the feedback form and tell you all about the good and the bad. I'm only one guy though....

[–] Riven@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Would it be possible for you to have a Lil pop up letting the people who use the app know? Something like, 'Hey, if there's anything you like or don't like about the app PLEASE let me know I'm listening and want to make it better.' maybe have it be at the top of any new download patchnotes.

[–] Jtotheb@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

In the spirit of offering feedback I disagree, pop-ups are terrible design, super abrasive and make the experience worse no matter when they show up

That just takes time. You will start to notice some feedback trickle in and advise you to wait on a lot of it until you see trends so you aren't appealing to vocal minority with changes. Also, I've found putting together a core testing group of people whose opinions you trust is very helpful. Give them early access to new versions and demonstrate an interest in their feedback and they can help with bug finding and feature requests.

[–] 01189998819991197253@infosec.pub 0 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

If the app offers a feedback option through the app itself, I usually use it. But if I have to go into a git for feedback, I usually don't. Nothing against git, I just don't ever remember when I'm in front of the computer. [I, too, would enjoy an android app. On fdroid, if at all possible, but playstore is fine, too, if you don't want to foss your project.]

[Edit]

[–] discomatic@lemmy.ca 0 points 5 months ago (2 children)

I am the mouthy broad you love to hate. Make an Android version and I'll tell you everything I can, using proper vernacular. I'm a frontend developer so I might actually offer helpful feedback.

libreddit is a thing

[–] Veraxus@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago

I blocked Reddit via PiHole and configured Kagi to never show me Reddit results. I’m here because Reddit can DIAF.

Ad + Reddit

Pass. Read the room

No need to apologize, just sharing my sentiments

[–] nexas_XIII@lemm.ee 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I think they’re questioning what exactly you mean with your initial post.

[–] stevedidwhat_infosec@infosec.pub 0 points 5 months ago

I’ll let them clarify that then

[–] n0pe@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Read the room says the person who clearly cannot read the room.

[–] stevedidwhat_infosec@infosec.pub 0 points 5 months ago

The majority of comments here have been anti-Reddit altogether.

Plenty of people moved here to get away from supporting their platform and decisions to shit on devs.

Don’t know what you’re referring to…

[–] Ashyr@sh.itjust.works 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Very neat. I haven’t used Reddit in a year, but I wanted to check out your app out of curiosity. I think I feel much healthier without it being a regular part of my life, but this is an interesting window I could glance through from time to time.

The comment collapse feature seems to work very inconsistently. Where should you be tapping or how in order to collapse a comment thread?

[–] overdevs@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

On the comment text? Anywhere works except the edges or where the u/user link is. Double tapping a comment should collapse the comment and the comments in it's own thread.

[–] Ashyr@sh.itjust.works 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I wasn’t double tapping intentionally! That’s the ticket. I was tapping around looking for a collapse trigger and must have occasionally tapped quickly enough to earn a double tap.

Very cool and thanks for making this.

[–] overdevs@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago

When you tap three dots(...) on the top-right of every comment, a menu opens. It has a collapse option when clicked it displays the exact same information on how to collpase the comment. I added it specifically because people keep asking about how to collapse the comments.

How does this app work given the API costs? How does it manage to not deliver ads?

I ask because, while I’ve currently embargoed myself from Reddit, I’d like to have some details noted so I don’t fall in love with this and then get hurt again.

[–] BassDroid@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

How do I save a subreddit?

[–] overdevs@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago

Go to the subreddit, press the three bars icon on top right. Click subscribe.

[–] CluckN@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

How does RDX avoid using the Reddit API? I’ve used it a few times and was impressed on how fast it responded.

In a week if everything goes right.

[–] moonbasesquid@lemmy.zip 0 points 5 months ago

Is there currently any way to stay up to date on the release status of the Android app?

[–] Humanbiscuit@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

How do you save photos etc ?

[–] overdevs@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago

On iPhone - Click on the photo, it will open an image viewer with share option on top, tap that, save photo, If you are using iPad then I will add the feature in next update. To save the GIFs on both iPhone and iPad tap the save icon below every video/gif post (it is just before the safari icon)

Thanks, subscribing without an account is exactly what I needed for some small communities not on Lemmy. If you could add a feature to hide specific user's comments (Automoderator), that'd be awesome.

[–] overdevs@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago

Yeah I will collapse automod by default in next update.

[–] prashanthvsdvn@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Please check the video downloader. It only downloads the video part and skips the audio part. Also is there a way to subscribe by specifying multi Reddit link??
